Stuart Laing (diplomat)
Stuart Laing (born 22 July 1948) is a former British diplomat and was Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge from 2008 to 2018. Career as diplomat Laing entered the diplomatic service in 1970. During his service in the Diplomatic Service, Laing held the following offices: * Deputy Ambassador to the Czech Republic—1989–1992 * Deputy Ambassador to Saudi Arabia—1992–1995 * High Commissioner to Brunei—1998–2002 * Ambassador to Oman—2002–2005 * Ambassador to Kuwait—2005–2008 Academic career Laing graduated from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1970 having studied Classics. He was appointed Master of his old college Corpus Christi on 1 October 2008 succeeding Oliver Rackham, and retired from that position in August 2018. Classics or classical studies is the study of classical antiquity. In the Western world, classics traditionally refers to the study of Classical Greek and Roman literature and their related original languages, Ancient Greek and Latin. Classics also includes Greco-Roman philosophy, history, archaeology, anthropology, art, mythology and society as secondary subjects. Christopher Kelly (born 1964) is an Australian classicist and historian, who specializes in the later Roman Empire and the classical tradition.Corpus Christi Collegfaculty bio He has been Master of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge since 2018. Early life and education He studied history and law at the University of Sydney as an undergraduate. He earned a doctorate at Trinity College, Cambridge. Academic career Kelly is Professor of Classics and Ancient History in the Faculty of Classics, University of Cambridge. He is a previous chairman of the faculty. Newnham College is a women's constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Maurice Henry Dorman
Sir Maurice Henry Dorman (7 August 1912 – 26 October 1993) was the representative of the Crown in the then-Commonwealth Realms of Tanganyika, Trinidad and Tobago, Sierra Leone, and Malta. Dorman was born in 1912 and was the eldest son of John Ehrenfried Dorman and Madeleine Louise Bostock. Both his parents came from big industrial families in the town of Stafford. His mother was a magistrate and one of the first female dentists. Dorman was educated at Sedbergh School and Magdalene College, Cambridge. He served in Sierra Leone from 1956 until 1962, for which he was knighted in 1957. From 27 April 1961 (Sierra Leone's independence day) to 27 April 1962, Dorman was the Governor-General of Sierra Leone. From 1962 until 1964, he was the Colonial Governor of Malta and then became Governor-General of Malta from September 1964 until July 1971, when he was replaced by Sir Anthony Mamo.
