Strongroom (film)
''Strongroom'' is a 1962 British 'B' crime drama film directed by Vernon Sewell and starring Derren Nesbitt, Colin Gordon and Ann Lynn. A group of criminals lock two bank employees in a safe during a robbery. Plot Three small-time crooks, Griff, Len and Len's brother Alec, hold up a bank just after closing time on a Saturday preceding an Easter Monday bank holiday. The stuffy bank manager, Mr Spencer, and his secretary, Rose are locked in the bank's airtight vault, or "Strongroom" by the crooks when two cleaners unexpectedly arrive. The robbers escape but realise that they face possible murder convictions as the bank will be closed for days and the two employees will suffocate. The crooks improvise a plan to leave the keys to the vault in a telephone box and alert the police by an anonymous phone call. Alec has this task. Vernon Sewell
Vernon Campbell Sewell (4 July 1903 – 21 June 2001) was a British film director, writer, producer and, briefly, an actor. Sewell was born in London, England, and was educated at Marlborough College. He directed more than 30 films during his career, starting with ''Morgenrot (film), Morgenrot'' (1933) and ending with ''Burke & Hare (1971 film), Burke & Hare'' (1971). He worked chiefly in B-movies, some of which were, according to the BFI Screenonline, "well above the usual cut-price standards of film-making at this level." He made a number of films for Anglo-Amalgamated. Sewell was married to the actress Joan Carol (born Joan Roscoe Catt 1905–1986) in 1950. He died on 21 June 2001 in Durban, South Africa, at age 97. Robert James Leslie Halliwell (23 February 1929 – 21 January 1989) was a British film critic, encyclopaedist and television rights buyer for ITV, the British commercial network, and Channel 4. It was written by Malcolm Hulke and Eric Paice based on an Edgar Wallace story. Plot Cold and vicious Tony and his more pleasant-natured but easily influenced partner-in-crime Frank hatch a plan to rob bookmaker Joe Carter of his takings as he leaves the local dog track. They attack him brutally, then realise that the case containing the cash is chained to Joe's wrist. They bundle him unconscious into the back seat of his car and they drive around trying to figure out a way to release the case.
