Stromness Primary School
Stromness Primary School is a primary school in Stromness, Orkney. The school has around 125 students. History On June 21, 1919, students from both the primary and higher schools were taken to witness the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow. In 1996, a pupil had to commute to Stromness School by ferry after the school on Graemsay, of which he was the only pupil, closed. The cost of keeping the school open had been £54,000 per year. In 2010, Big Brother winner Cameron Stout eschewed a media career to become a teacher at the school. On January 15, 2013, the school relocated to a new building. The new school was officially opened by Anne, Princess Royal on July 4, 2013. A copper sculpture by Anne Bevan and funded by the Orkney Islands Council was installed on the school grounds. Stromness
Stromness (, ; ) is the second-most populous town in Orkney, Scotland. It is in the southwestern part of Mainland, Orkney. It is a burgh with a parish around the outside with the town of Stromness as its capital. Etymology The name "Stromness" comes from the Old Norse ''Straumnes''. ''Straumr'' refers to the strong tides that rip past the Point of Ness through Hoy Sound to the south of the town. ''Nes'' means "headland". Stromness thus means "headland protruding into the tidal stream". In Viking times the anchorage where Stromness now stands was called Hamnavoe. The Orkney Islands Council, is the local authority for the Orkney Islands, one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It was established in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973 and was largely unaffected by the Scottish local government changes of 1996. Graemsay
Graemsay () is an island in the western approaches to Scapa Flow, in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The island has two lighthouses. Graemsay lies within the parish of Stromness. Geography and geology Graemsay lies between Hoy and Stromness on Mainland Orkney, separated from the Mainland by Clestrain Sound. The island is in area and is mainly crofted. The island's geology is Old Red Sandstone of the Devonian period, with two volcanic faults. On the north coast there is granite-schist, a great rarity in Orkney. Graemsay is surrounded by strong tidal races, known locally as ''roosts''. An Orkney Ferries service, usually operated by , links the island with Stromness and Moaness on Hoy. Cameron Stout
Cameron Stout (born 8 March 1971) is a Scottish journalist and presenter for BBC Radio Orkney and the winner of '' Big Brother 2003''. He received 1.9 million votes, 500,000 more than runner-up Ray Shah. Cameron is the elder brother of television and radio presenter Julyan Sinclair. ''Big Brother'' Before the contest, Stout had worked as a fish trader for an American company in Orkney in Scotland. Anne, Princess Royal (Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise; born 15 August 1950) is a member of the British royal family. Anne Bevan (born 1965) is a Scottish visual artist, sculptor, and lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art. Early life She graduated with an MA Hons in Fine Art (Sculpture) from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art between 1983 and 1988. Career Her exhibitions include ''Rosengarten,'' a collaboration with writer Janice Galloway at the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow in 2004. ''The Orcadian'' is the oldest newspaper in Orkney, Scotland, first published in 1854. At first a monthly paper, it soon became a weekly. The newspaper is based in Kirkwall but printed in Glasgow for sale every Thursday.
