The Stripschapprijs is a Dutch prize awarded to comic creators for their entire body of work. It is awarded annually by the ''Stripschap'', the Dutch Society of comics fans, since 1974. The prize is non-pecuniary, but is considered the most important award for comics in the country. Jean Dulieu
Jan van Oort (13 April 1921 – 29 November 2006) was a Dutch children's book writer and comic strip cartoonist, working under the pseudonym of Jean Dulieu. He is known for his creation of ''Paulus the woodgnome''. Personal biography Jan van Oort was born on 13 April 1921 in Amsterdam.Many references suggest Soest, but that is wrong. He was born in Amsterdam, but lived in Soest when he first created Paulus. He was the son of concert singer Hendrik C. van Oort, and grandson of the political cartoonist Johan Braakensiek. Van Oort was into music, and creative activities such as drawing and puppet making. Jan van Oort studied the violin on the conservatorium where he graduated in 1940, and became violinist with the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. During the Dutch famine of 1944, the orchestra was decommissioned, allowing Van Oort more time for drawing. Piet Wijn
Pieter Cornelis Wijn (17 May 1929 – 6 October 2010) was a prolific Dutch comics creator. Wijn was born in Hilversum. His creations include the cartoon versions of Marten Toonder's Tom Puss and Kappie, Gloria van Goes, Douwe Dabbert, and many other cartoons. He was awarded the Stripschapsprijs in 1984. Dick Matena
Dick Matena (born 24 April 1943) is a Dutch comics writer and cartoonist. He has also published under the pseudonyms A. den Dooier, John Kelly and Dick Richards. He has made several kinds of comics, from humor comics to erotic comics, but is best known for his comic book adaptations of famous literary novels. Biography Toonder studios In 1960, at the age of 17, Matena started working as a volunteer at the Toonder studios. He helped with the drawing projects of Tom Poes (1962–1963) and Panda (1961–1968). In 1968 his first own comic appeared in the comic magazine ''Pep''. Freelance period In 1964 Matena started working as a freelancer, in the beginning mainly for the Toonder studios. Martin Lodewijk
Martinus Spyridon Johannes Lodewijk (born 30 April 1939) is a Dutch comics writer and cartoonist, and advertising adviser. Martin Lodewijk was born in Rotterdam. He dropped out of high school in 1957, and started drawing cartoons, notably of spacecraft and pirates. In 1959, his first cartoon was published in the newspaper ''Het Parool'', after which he specialized in drawing for commercial advertising. For the weekly comics magazine ''Pep'', he co-created with Jan Kruis the '' Agent 327'' comic in 1966, a feature he ended up writing and drawing for close to fifty years. He provided scripts for other strips, such as Don Lawrence's ''Storm''. After ''Pep'' and '' Sjors'' merged into '' Eppo'', Lodewijk became ''Eppo'''s chief editor. Maurice Tillieux
Maurice Tillieux (7 August 1921 – 2 February 1978) was a Belgian writer and comic artist. He is regarded by many as a major figure of post- war Belgian comics. Early life Maurice Tillieux was born in Huy in 1921. At first he studied for the merchant navy, but his career prospects were sunk following the German invasion of Belgium in 1940. Gerrit De Jager
Gerrit de Jager (born 1954, Amsterdam) is a Dutch cartoonist, creator of series such as ', ', ' and '. His career started in the early 1980s with Wim Stevenhagen under the pseudonym ''Prutspruts'' ("fiddle-fiddle"), which later changed to ''Prutswerk'' ("lousy job"). In the early stages he worked with the later Dutch musician Fay Lovsky. The first comic they brought out, titled ''De Ironische Man'' ("The Ironic Man") did not prove to be very successful, however the (now) duo went on producing comics such as ''Bert J. Prulleman'' and ''Pruts Pruts, Privat Kreye'' for the alternative magazine ''De Vrije Balloen''. In this time the Familie Doorzon was born. Joseph Gillain (), better known by his pen name Jijé (; 13 January 1914 – 19 June 1980), was a Belgian comics artist, best known for being a seminal artist on the ''Spirou et Fantasio'' strip (and for having introduced the Fantasio character) and the creator of one of the first major European western strips, '' Jerry Spring''. Johannes Andries “Jan” Kruis (; 8 June 1933 – 19 January 2017) was a Dutch comics artist best known for the family strip ''Jack, Jacky and the Juniors'' (''Jan, Jans en de Kinderen''). Biography He began creating comics as a child. Later he worked for the Dutch comics pioneer Marten Toonder. Marten Toonder
Marten Toonder (2 May 1912 – 27 July 2005) was a Dutch comic strip creator, born in Rotterdam. He was probably the most successful comic artist in the Netherlands and had a great influence on the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. He is most famous for his series ''Tom Puss'' and ''Panda''. Tom Puss/Oliver B. Bumble series In 1931 after his final exams, Marten Toonder went to Buenos Aires with his father. Here he got acquainted with the work of the well-known Argentine artist and editor Dante Quinterno, who ran a studio producing comics.
