Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic ( ; born October 23, 1959) is an American singer, musician, songwriter, record producer, actor and author. He is best known for creating comedy songs that make light of pop culture and often parody specific songs by contemporary musicians. He also performs original songs that are style pastiches of the work of other acts, as well as polka medleys of several popular songs, most of which feature his trademark accordion. Since having a comedy song aired on '' The Dr. Demento Radio Show'' in 1976 at age 16, Yankovic has sold more than 12 million albums (), recorded more than 150 parodies and original songs, and performed more than 1,000 live shows. His work has earned him five Grammy Awards and a further 11 nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the U.S. His first top ten ''Billboard'' album ('' Straight Outta Lynwood'') and single (" White & Nerdy") were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career. Word Crimes
"Word Crimes" is a song by American musician "Weird Al" Yankovic from his fourteenth studio album, ''Mandatory Fun'' (2014). The song is a parody of the 2013 single "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke, featuring Pharrell Williams and T.I. The song spoofs misuse of proper English grammar and usage, reflecting Yankovic's own rigor for proper syntax and semantics. Yankovic chose a topic that would be distinct from those used in many pre-existing parodies, and that would avoid the misogyny issues that had arisen from the source material. "Word Crimes" received favorable reviews from contemporary music critics, as some describing it as a highlight of ''Mandatory Fun''. The song's music video utilizes kinetic typography, and was compared to the earlier educational ''Schoolhouse Rock!'' musical cartoons. Composition The subject matter in "Word Crimes" was an extension of Yankovic's policy of writing "left-of-center" parodies, especially considering the number of parodies that surface on ...

The Saga Begins
"The Saga Begins" is a parody song by "Weird Al" Yankovic. It parodies " American Pie" by Don McLean, with lyrics that humorously summarize the plot of the film ''Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace'' through the point of view of Obi-Wan Kenobi, one of the film's protagonists. The song's title, not mentioned in the lyrics, derives from a tagline that appeared in teaser trailers and the film poster for ''The Phantom Menace'': "Every ''saga'' has a ''beginning''". "The Saga Begins" was released as a single from the 1999 album '' Running with Scissors'', and later appearing on the compilation album ''The Saga Begins''. History Set to the tune of Don McLean's " American Pie", "The Saga Begins" recounts the plot of ''Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace'', from Obi-Wan Kenobi's point of view. Yankovic gathered most of the information he needed to write the song from Internet spoilers. Lucasfilm declined a request for an advance screening, and Yankovic paid to attend a ...

Amish Paradise
"Amish Paradise" is a 1996 single by satirist "Weird Al" Yankovic. It is a parody of the hip hop song "Gangsta's Paradise" by Coolio featuring L.V. (which itself is a reworking of the Stevie Wonder song "Pastime Paradise"). Featured on the album '' Bad Hair Day'', it turns the original "Gangsta's Paradise", in which the narrator laments his dangerous way of life, on its head by presenting an Amish man praising his relatively plain and uncomplicated existence. Track listing # "Amish Paradise" – 3:20 # "Everything You Know Is Wrong" – 3:46 # " The Night Santa Went Crazy (Extra Gory Version)" – 3:59 # "Dare to Be Stupid (Instrumental)" – 3:25 Coolio's response Yankovic sought permission from Coolio before making "Amish Paradise", offering a percentage of the revenues. Yankovic was given rights to use the song by the record company (non-exclusive rights holders), but not by Coolio himself, who, when presented with Weird Al's offer, declined. Yankovic later stated on VH1' ...

White & Nerdy
"White & Nerdy" is the second single from "Weird Al" Yankovic's album ''Straight Outta Lynwood'', which was released on September 26, 2006. It parodies the song "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire and Krayzie Bone. The song both satirizes and celebrates nerd culture, as recited by the subject, who cannot "roll with the gangsta rap, gangstas" because he is "just too White people, white and nerdy". It includes many references to activities stereotypically associated with nerds and white people, such as collecting comic books and action figures, and playing ''Dungeons & Dragons (D&D)''. The song was Yankovic's first and only Billboard Hot 100, ''Billboard'' Hot 100 top 10 hit, peaking at No. 9. It was certified platinum by the RIAA, the first Yankovic single to achieve this feat. Track listing # "White & Nerdy" – 2:50 # "Don't Download This Song" – 3:54 Production and writing Although Yankovic usually records his songs with his band, the backing tracks for "White and Nerdy" we ...

Dare To Be Stupid (song)
"Dare to Be Stupid" is an original song by "Weird Al" Yankovic. It is a musical pastiche (what Yankovic calls a "style parody") of the band Devo. Lyrics and style Lyrically, the song encourages the listener to be stupid in various ways; mostly by advising them to do the opposite of common idioms (''e.g.'' " let the bedbugs bite" or " put all your eggs in one basket"), with the occasional absurd non sequitur (''e.g.'' "stick your head in the microwave and get yourself a tan"). The song also encourages the listener to " ...let your babies grow up to be cowboys," a reference to a popular country song, and to "squeeze all the Charmin you can while Mr. Whipple's not around," a reference to a long-running series of ads. The tune somewhat resembles that of "Deep Sleep", "Time Out For Fun" and "Big Mess" from Devo's '' Oh, No! It's Devo'' album. Al's line "Yes!" in a slightly altered voice is reminiscent of the "Yes!" from "Explosions" on the same album. A descending synth line hea ...

Smells Like Nirvana
"Smells Like Nirvana" is a song parody written and performed by American musician "Weird Al" Yankovic. A parody of Nirvana's song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", it was released as the lead single from Yankovic's ''Off the Deep End'' album in April 1992. "Smells Like Nirvana" was written during a three-year career low for Yankovic after the financial failure of his film ''UHF'', but captured the quickly-rising popularity of grunge and Nirvana's success. The song was written to ridicule the fact that many people could hardly understand Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain's lyrics in the original song. After being unable to contact Nirvana conventionally, Yankovic called Cobain while the band was on the set of ''Saturday Night Live'', where Cobain quickly gave permission to record the parody. Recording the song was a change for Yankovic and his band. Usually, the group were forced to record several overdubs. "Smells Like Nirvana", however, was relatively straightforward in its musical compositi ...

Mandatory Fun
''Mandatory Fun'' is the fourteenth studio album by American musician "Weird Al" Yankovic. The self-produced album was released by RCA Records in the United States on July 15, 2014, and was the final album on Yankovic's recording contract. Yankovic had previously released '' Alpocalypse'' in 2011 and was touring in support of it when he first spoke of his next record. When he began to work on ''Mandatory Fun'', Yankovic found himself listening to older acts, many of which he stylistically spoofed on the album. Recorded at studios in Los Angeles and Massachusetts from 2012 to 2014, ''Mandatory Fun'' contains twelve songs, which include parodies of songs by Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke, Iggy Azalea, Lorde and Imagine Dragons. It also features original songs in the form of pastiche, imitating the styles of the Pixies, Cat Stevens, Foo Fighters, Crosby, Stills & Nash and Southern Culture on the Skids. Yankovic composed the originals first and wrote the parodies last to allow them ...

Harvey The Wonder Hamster
''Alapalooza'' is the eighth studio album by "Weird Al" Yankovic, released in 1993. By the completion of his previous album, ''Off the Deep End'', Yankovic had already written all of the original songs that he planned to use on his next release. This new album, which would eventually be titled ''Alapalooza'' in reference to the music festival Lollapalooza, consisted of seven original songs and five parodies. It produced three parody singles: "Jurassic Park", "Bedrock Anthem", and "Achy Breaky Song". "Jurassic Park" was a top five hit on the Canadian magazine ''The Record''s single chart. Among the album's original creations were "Talk Soup", a tune originally intended to replace the theme song of the television show of the same name, and "Harvey the Wonder Hamster", an oft-requested jingle from one of Yankovic's Al TV specials. A music video compilation, entitled ''Alapalooza: the Videos'', was released the following year and contained four videos, only two of which were from it ...

Tacky (song)
"Tacky" is a song by American musician "Weird Al" Yankovic from his fourteenth studio album, ''Mandatory Fun'' (2014). The song is a parody of the 2013 single " Happy" by Pharrell Williams. The song mocks questionable style in fashion as well as activities considered gauche. Yankovic recorded the song as one of the last on ''Mandatory Fun'', and received Williams' approval directly, through email. He remarked he was "honored" to have his work spoofed by Yankovic. The song's one-shot music video parodies "Happy", and was the first in a series of eight videos released over eight days in promotion of ''Mandatory Fun''. It features cameo appearances by Aisha Tyler, Margaret Cho, Eric Stonestreet, Kristen Schaal, and Jack Black, and was produced by Nerdist Industries. Background As usual for him, Yankovic sought permission from the original artists for his parodies on ''Mandatory Fun''; in contrast to previous albums, he had few difficulties in obtaining these. Yankovic stated "This ...

You Don't Love Me Anymore ("Weird Al" Yankovic Song)
"You Don't Love Me Anymore" is a song by American recording artist "Weird Al" Yankovic. It was released as the second single from his seventh studio album '' Off the Deep End'' on June 19, 1992. While much of his musical output consists of parodies of other artists' material, "You Don't Love Me Anymore" is an original composition written and produced by Yankovic. A soft acoustic ballad in a style parody of James Taylor, the song features darkly humorous lyrics about a relationship between Yankovic and an unnamed woman that has faltered to the point that she repeatedly attempts to kill him, which he has only just begun to notice. Yankovic requested his record label Scotti Brothers to release the song as the second single from ''Off the Deep End''. As the label would only release the single if its music video was a parody, Yankovic modeled the video for "You Don't Love Me Anymore" after the video for the song " More Than Words" by American rock band Extreme. Directed by Jay L ...

Weasel Stomping Day
''Straight Outta Lynwood'' is the twelfth studio album by "Weird Al" Yankovic, released on September 26, 2006, the title drawing inspiration from hip hop group N.W.A's ''Straight Outta Compton''. It was the sixth studio album self-produced by Yankovic. The musical styles on the album are built around parodies and pastiches of pop and rock music of the mid-2000s. The album's lead single, "White & Nerdy", is a parody of Chamillionaire's hit single " Ridin'". The single debuted at #28 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and peaked at #9 the following week; " Canadian Idiot", a parody of Green Day's " American Idiot", also charted, peaking at #82. The album contains three further parodies, based on "Confessions Part II" by Usher, "Do I Make You Proud" by Taylor Hicks, and '' Trapped in the Closet'' by R. Kelly. The other half of the album is original material, containing many "style parodies"—musical imitations of existing artists, such as Brian Wilson, Rage Against the Machine, Spa ...
