Strictly Ballroom (band)
Strictly Ballroom was a Los Angeles, California underground emo/hardcore punk/indie rock band active between 1994 and 1999. History The group was formed in 1994 by Chris Gunst (guitar/vocals) and Jimmy Tamborello (bass/vocals), who met while they were both college radio DJs at KXLU in Los Angeles. The band's sound was described as "Enocore" by the press and some fans at the time, due to their use of Brian Eno-like soundscapes merged with the sounds of hardcore punk rock. Strictly Ballroom was affiliated with the emo hardcore scene of the mid-to-late 1990s and played at known clubs such as Los Angeles' Jabberjaw. Gunst went on to form Beachwood Sparks, and Tamborello went on to form the Postal Service. Both projects subsequently release albums on Sub Pop Records, the latter of which received platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America. Psychic Ills are an American experimental rock/psychedelic rock band from New York City, consisting of Tres Warren (vocals/guitar; 1978-2020), Elizabeth Hart (vocals/bass), Adam Amram, Jon Catfish Delorme, and Brent Cordero. They formed in 2003, and have released five albums, one compilation, four EPs and a number of singles. The band was signed to The Social Registry from 2005 to 2010. Since then its albums have been released by Sacred Bones Records. History Tres Warren (1978-2020) was born and raised in Texas, where he attended the University of Texas at Austin and met Elizabeth Hart. Figurine (band)
Figurine is an American electronic music group. The band members, friends since high school, use the pseudonyms David Figurine (Forster David Rudolph), James Figurine ( James Tamborello) and Meredith Figurine (Meredith Landman). While the band seems to be inactive , all three members are also involved in other bands or have released solo work under their respective Figurine monikers. Mainly a long distance collaboration, the band was a precursor to James Figurine/Tamborello's later, more commercially successful project The Postal Service. Tamborello has also used the Figurine pseudonym for an official remix of Bright Eyes' '' Easy/Lucky/Free'' in 2005 and a solo album in 2006. Meredith is also a vocalist for Boothby. Aside from his main solo project, Tamborello is also known as a member of the groups The Postal Service, Headset, Strictly Ballroom, and Figurine, where he is sometimes cited as James Figurine. The Tyde
The Tyde are an American indie rock group. Tracing their roots to early 1990s LA indie band Further, formed by Darren Rademaker and brother Brent. The Tyde cite Felt, the Beach Boys and the Byrds as major influences. They are not to be confused with band from the Iowa in the late 1960s called the TYDE, known for songs such as "Psychedelic Pill" and "Lost". The initial line-up featured Darren Rademaker (vocals, guitars), Darren's ex-wife Anh Do Rademaker ( keyboards) and brother Brent Rademaker (bass, vocals) as well as Ben Knight (guitar), Christopher Gunst, Brent's partner in Beachwood Sparks, (drums) and Dave Scher (guitars). Further was an American indie rock band from Los Angeles that evolved from an earlier band, Shadowland. They released several albums during the 1990s. History Further evolved from Shadowland, a sixties-influenced band led by brothers Brent and Darren Rademaker, that released two albums for Geffen Records in 1989 and 1990 (''Shadowland'' and ''The Beauty of Escaping'' respectively). Unlike Shadowland, Further were very much an indie rock band, gaining comparisons with the likes of Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth ( Lee Ranaldo even guesting on their debut album). Their second album, '' Sometimes Chimes'', contained 25 tracks, and drew comparisons to Beck, Unrest, Pavement and Sebadoh. Sunday's Best was an American emo band formed in 1997. History The band's start came at KXLU, Loyola Marymount University's famous college radio station, where guitarist Ian Moreno, singer/bassist Ed Reyes, and drummer Tom Ackerman (formerly of Skiploader) all worked at in the late 1990s. Moreno and Reyes started the band with singer/guitarist Pedro Benito, a friend of Reyes's, and recorded the band's first 7" single in 1998, before recruiting Ackerman to play drums. In 1999, they put out their first EP, the seven-song ''Where You Are Now'', and in 2000, they followed with their first LP, ''Poised to Break'', on Polyvinyl Record Co., Polyvinyl. In 2002, their second album ''The Californian'' appeared, showcasing the group's cleanest pop sound yet. Red House Painters were an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1988, before relocating to San Francisco, California in 1989. Originally formed by singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek and drummer Anthony Koutsos, the pair were soon joined by guitarist Gorden Mack and bassist Jerry Vessel. Phil Carney would later replace Gorden Mack as the band's guitarist. The group released 6 studio albums and an EP, before dissolving in 2001, and are considered to be a pioneering act of the slowcore subgenre. History While in Atlanta, Georgia, Ohio-born Kozelek became friends with Anthony Koutsos, a drummer.
