Street Chant
Street Chant were a New Zealand indie rock band who were signed to Flying Nun Records. The band formed in Auckland in late 2007 with Emily Edrosa on guitar and vocals, Billie Rogers on bass and backing vocals and Mikey Sperring on drums, originally with the name Mean Street. In 2009, Sperring left and was replaced by Alex Brown and the band changed their name to Street Chant. In 2010, the band released their debut album ''Means'' to critical acclaim, and won the inaugural Critics Choice Prize at the 2010 New Zealand Music Awards. In 2011, ''Means'' was shortlisted for the Taite Music Prize, and nominated for "Best Alternative Album" at the 2011 New Zealand Music Awards In 2011, Street Chant opened for The Lemonheads in their "It's a Shame About Ray" 20th anniversary American tour. A-side And B-side
The A-side and B-side are the two sides of vinyl records and cassettes, and the terms have often been printed on the labels of two-sided music recordings. The A-side of a single usually features a recording that its artist, producer, or record company intends to be the initial focus of promotional efforts and radio airplay, with the aim of it becoming a hit record. The B-side (or "flip-side") is a secondary recording that typically receives less attention, although some B-sides have been as successful as, or more so than, their A-sides. Use of this language has largely declined in the 21st century as the music industry has transitioned away from analog recordings towards digital formats without physical sides, such as downloads and streaming. 2016 APRA Silver Scroll Awards
The 2016 APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held on Thursday 29 September 2016 at Vector Arena in Auckland, celebrating excellence in New Zealand songwriting. Five years later APRA revoked the 2016 Silver Scroll after recipient Thomas Oliver admitted assaulting a woman on the night of the awards. Silver Scroll award The Silver Scroll award celebrates outstanding achievement in songwriting of original New Zealand pop music. The short list of finalists was announced on 1 September. The Silver Scroll was awarded to Thomas Oliver. He is no longer recognised as the winner after APRA revoked the award in 2021. New Zealand Music Award For Critics' Choice Prize
The Critics' Choice Prize was a New Zealand Music Awards prize awarded to New Zealand musical artists who were expected to be successful in the music industry in the future. To be eligible for the award, an artist must have neither released a studio album nor have been nominated for a New Zealand Music Award in the past. The prize was judged by a panel of 13 music-industry critics. The winner was decided at a live event held at the Kings Arms tavern in Auckland. Each of the three shortlisted artists performs, then the judges deliberated and the prize was presented. The prize included a $10,000 NZ On Air grant and mentoring from industry professionals. The prize was first awarded in 2010 to Street Chant and last awarded in 2016 to Scuba Diva. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Inspired by punk's energy and do it yourself ethic but determined to break from rock cliches, artists experimented with styles like funk, electronic music, jazz, and dance music; the music production, production techniques of dub music, dub and disco; and ideas from art and politics, including critical theory, modernist art, Film, cinema and modernist literature, literature. The 3Ds
The 3Ds were a New Zealand noise pop band based from Dunedin, together from 1988 to 1997. They recorded three albums and several EPs, the best known of which is ''The Venus Trail'' (1993). They achieved commercial and critical success worldwide in the period between 1992 and 1995. History The band was formed in May 1988 by Dominic Stones, Denise Roughan and David Saunders. The band's name refers to the members' names all starting with "D". In 1989, they were joined by David Mitchell from Auckland bands Exploding Budgies and Goblin Mix, who introduced the twin-guitar attack which became the defining feature of the group. He also created all EP and album artwork apart from Fish Tales which featured a painting by Jane Davidson. The Lemonheads
The Lemonheads are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston in 1986 by Evan Dando, Ben Deily, and Jesse Peretz. Dando has remained the band's only constant member. After their initial punk-influenced releases and tours as an independent/ college rock band in the late 1980s, the Lemonheads' popularity with a mass audience grew in 1992 with the major label album '' It's a Shame about Ray'', which was produced, engineered, and mixed by the Robb Brothers ( Bruce Robb, Dee, and Joe). This was followed by a cover of Simon and Garfunkel's " Mrs. Robinson", which eventually became one of the band's most successful singles. 2011 New Zealand Music Awards
The 2011 New Zealand Music Awards was the 46th holding of the annual ceremony featuring awards for musical artists based in or originating from New Zealand. Finalists for the three technical awards were announced in August 2011 with winners announced on 7 September, the date on which finalists for 16 'non-technical' categories were revealed. Five 'non-technical' awards were presented without a group of finalists being selected.
