''Strangers on a Train'' (1950) is a psychological thriller novel by Patricia Highsmith about two men whose lives become entangled after one of them proposes they "trade" murders. It was adapted as a film in 1951 by director Alfred Hitchcock and again in 1969 by Robert Sparr. It has since been adapted in whole or in part for film and television several times. The novel was adapted for radio in 2004 by Craig Warner, and adapted for the stage in 2013 (also by Warner). Plot summary Architect Guy Haines wants to divorce his unfaithful wife, Miriam, to marry the woman he loves, Anne Faulkner. While on a train to see his wife, he meets Charles Anthony Bruno, a psychopathic playboy who proposes an idea to "exchange murders": Bruno will kill Miriam if Guy kills Bruno's father. ''Strangers on a Train'' is a 1951 American psychological thriller film noir produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock, screenplay by Raymond Chandler and Czenzi Ormonde based on the 1950 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith. It was shot in late 1950, and released by Warner Bros. on June 30, 1951, starring Farley Granger, Ruth Roman and Robert Walker. The story concerns two strangers who meet on a train, one of whom is a psychopath who suggests that they "exchange" murders so that neither will be caught. The film initially received mixed reviews, but has since been regarded much more favorably. In 2021, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". ''Strangers on a Train'' (also known as ''Voices Calling'') is the third and final studio album by American baroque pop band the Left Banke and was released in March 1986. Recording ''Strangers on a Train'' was recorded in 1978 by a reformed line-up of the Left Banke, featuring three of the original members: Steve Martin Caro, Steve Martin, Tom Finn (singer), Tom Finn, and George Cameron (musician), George Cameron. Original member Michael Brown (rock musician), Michael Brown had initially been involved in the recording, but left after working on five of the songs. Although Brown played piano and mellotron during the Studio recording, sessions he is not credited on the album, either as a writer or musician. Audio engineer, Recording engineer/Record producer, producer Les Fradkin was also involved with the same recording sessions that featured Brown.
