''Straight Jacket Memoirs'' is a 2006 EP by Jon Oliva's Pain. Distributed by AFM Records, it was the first release by the band for their new label. The release featured two new full songs from the then forthcoming album, ''Maniacal Renderings'', and live renditions of two songs from the band's previous album, '''Tage Mahal''. The other track featured on the release is an edited version of the song "The Evil Beside You". Jon Oliva's Pain
Jon Oliva's Pain (sometimes referred to as JOP) was the latest project of Savatage co-founder Jon Oliva. Band history Originally, the project consisted entirely of solo recordings by Oliva, but after several months of work he was joined by former members of Circle II Circle to form a band. The band's first performance was at the Criss Oliva Memorial Concert in 2003, where Oliva played a set of 6 songs from his solo catalog plus "In the Dream" from '' Power of the Night'', "Hey Bulldog" by The Beatles and a cover of "Wishing Well" by the band Free (which was covered by Savatage on their album '' Fight for the Rock''). Joining Jon on stage that night were Matt LaPorte (guitar), John Zahner (keyboards), Jason Jennings (bass), and Christopher Kinder (drums). Heavy metal (or simply metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and United States. John Nicholas "Jon" Oliva (born July 22, 1959) is an American singer and musician. He is best known as the co-founder, keyboardist and lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Savatage, which he co-founded with his younger brother Criss Oliva. Since 1996 he has also been a songwriter, musician and vocalist in Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Paul O'Neill (February 23, 1956 – April 5, 2017) was an American music composer, producer, lyricist, and guitarist. Career Early years Paul O'Neill was born in Flushing, Queens, New York City,Huffington Post, Entertainment, April 25, 2012 the second of his parents' ten children. His music and literary influences, as well as his own artistic visions, were well established before he began working full-time in the industry in his late teens. 'Tage Mahal
''Tage Mahal'' is a 2004 release by Jon Oliva's Pain. It was the first non-Savatage related release by Jon Oliva since 1994's ''Doctor Butcher''. Ironically, just like Savatage, the band faced a problem with its name. Oliva originally wanted to call the band 'Tage Mahal,ProgPowerUK II programme. Interview with Jon Oliva, page 7. as a homage to Savatage, although Oliva admits he could have called the band "Savatage, or Jon Oliva's Savatage, or Savatage Lite, but I didn't do that out of respect for the guys that were in Savatage." Prior to the album's release, Oliva discovered a blues musician Taj Mahal. Under the Consumer Confusion law, the album would have been pulled off the shelves, despite the 'Tage spelling. Maniacal Renderings
''Maniacal Renderings'' is a 2006 release by Jon Oliva's Pain. It was their first full-length studio recording released for new label AFM Records. The album features material and riffs recorded by Jon Oliva's late brother, Criss. Jon said that he moves around a lot and his wife found a box of old cassette tapes inside a shoebox, with Criss's handwriting on it. Jon said that during their days in Savatage, the two would write, practice and record music, then swap so they could finish each other's songs. He stated that there is plenty of material from the box that could be used in future works. Christopher Michael Oliva (April 3, 1963 – October 17, 1993) was an American musician who was the lead guitarist and co-founder of the heavy metal band Savatage. During his lifetime, he released seven studio albums and one EP with the band. Biography Early life Oliva's family moved around the country during his childhood, stopping off in California before making Florida their home. It was in California that Oliva found music and considered it his calling, and he continued his musical interests when he moved to Florida. His main influences as a guitarist were Ritchie Blackmore, Tony Iommi, Uli Jon Roth and Michael Schenker. He spent countless hours figuring out his favorite songs on records, and when he found it difficult to figure out a part on the record he just made up his own licks.
