Storm Eleanor (2018)
Storm Eleanor (known as Cyclone Burglind in Germany) was an extratropical cyclone and European windstorm that affected Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Benelux, Germany, Austria and Switzerland on the 2–3 January 2018. The storm caused extensive damage and traffic disruption. It was given the name ''Eleanor'' by Met Éireann and the UK Met Office, while the Free University of Berlin named the low pressure ''Burglind''. Meteorological history Eleanor developed to the west of Ireland as a secondary cyclone on 2 January to the parent low "Alja" to the southwest of Iceland, developing as a wave along the trailing cold front of the parent low. Eleanor rapidly intensified reaching a minimum pressure of as it moved east across Scotland under a strong westerly jet stream. Before the low centre tracked across the North Sea to Denmark. Goldau
Goldau is a town in the community of Arth, canton of Schwyz, Switzerland. It lies between the Rigi and Rossberg mountains, and between lakes Lake Zug, Zug and Lake Lauerz, Lauerz. Well known attractions include the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau and the Arth-Goldau valley station of the Arth-Rigi Bahn connecting to the Rigi mountain. Goldau is primarily known in Switzerland for its historic landslide, the "Goldau landslide" (''Goldauer Bergsturz'') of 1806 which killed 457 people. Sting Jet
A sting jet is a narrow, transient and Mesoscale meteorology, mesoscale airstream that descends from the troposphere, mid-troposphere to the surface in some extratropical cyclones. When present, sting jets produce some of the strongest surface-level winds in extratropical cyclones and can generate damaging wind gusts in excess of . Sting jets are short-lived, lasting on the order of hours, and the area subjected to their strong winds is typically no wider than , making their effects highly localised. Studies have identified sting jets in mid-latitude cyclones primarily in the northern Atlantic and western Europe, though they may occur elsewhere. The storms that produce sting jets have tended to follow the Extratropical cyclone#Shapiro–Keyser model, Shapiro–Keyser model of extratropical cyclone development.
