Storm-Z (russian: Шторм-Z, Shtorm-Z) is a series of penal military units established by Russia by April 6, 2023, at the latest. On June 24, 2023 Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law disbanding Storm-Z and replacing it with new Storm-V units. However, on 12 February 2024, Dmytro Riumshyn, the commander of Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade, claimed that Russian forces were deploying regular troops, sabotage groups, as well as both "Storm-Z" and "Storm-V" penal units in Avdiivka. Later, on 27 February 2024, Illia Yevlash, the spokesman for the Khortytsia operational-strategic group, claimed that Russian commanders were using human wave tactics involving Storm-Z and Storm-V. Storm-V
Storm-V (russian: Шторм-V, Shtorm-V) is a series of penal military units established by a law which was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin which disbanded Storm-Z and replaced it with Storm-V. The V in Storm-V stands for "vityazi", the Russian word for ‘knights.’ History Storm-V was created on 24 June 2023 when Russian President Vladimir Putin disbanded Storm-Z and created Storm V. However, on 12 February 2024, Dmytro Riumshyn, the commander of Ukraine's 47th Mechanized Brigade (Ukraine), 47th Mechanized Brigade, claimed that Russian forces were deploying regular troops, sabotage groups, as well as both "Storm-Z" and "Storm-V" penal units in Avdiivka. 2023 Ukrainian Counteroffensive
In early June 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces occupying its territory with a long-term goal of breaching the frontlines. Efforts were made in many directions, primarily in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, among others. The battle of Chasiv Yar is an ongoing military engagement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine between the Russian Armed Forces and the Armed Forces of Ukraine for control of the city of Chasiv Yar and surrounding villages. The battle began on 4 April 2024 with the first direct assault on the city by Russian forces, and has thus far seen the confirmed capture of the Kanal district and the claimed capture of the Novyi district by Russia, the two easternmost of the city, and the advance of their forces to all land east of the Siverskyi Donets – Donbas Canal separating the city. Yevgeny Vladimirovich Burdinsky ( rus, Евгений Владимирович Бурдинский; born 25 August 1960) is a Russian colonel general, who, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine was in charge of Russia's mobilization efforts. Biography Burdinsky was born in Belogorsk, Amur Oblast, in the Soviet Far East, on 25 August 1960. After graduating from the Ussuriysk Suvorov Military School in 1977, he was accepted to the Far Eastern Higher Combined Arms Command School in Blagoveshchensk. After graduating from the school, he was sent to serve in the 336th Guards Naval Infantry Brigade of the Baltic Fleet at Baltiysk. With this unit, Burdinsky served as a platoon commander, company commander, tank battalion chief of staff, and naval infantry battalion commander. Avdiivka (, , is a city of regional significance in Ukraine's Donetsk Oblast. The city is in the center of the region, just north of the city of Donetsk.
