Storey (formerly, Madera Station) is an unincorporated community in Madera County, California, United States. It is located on the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF) east-northeast of Madera, at an elevation of It is also about southeast of the Fresno River. The area was named after William Benson Storey, the former president of the ATSF. The former Storey Train Station (used by ATSF, and subsequently by Amtrak), was located in Storey, but Amtrak always referred to the station as Madera. The station was permanently closed after Amtrak moved its service to the new Madera station in November 2010. Atchison, Topeka, And Santa Fe Railroad
The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. To create a demand for its services, the railroad set up real estate offices and sold farmland from the land grants that it was awarded by Congress. Despite being chartered to serve the city, the railroad chose to bypass Santa Fe, due to the engineering challenges of the mountainous terrain. Eventually a branch line from Lamy, New Mexico, brought the Santa Fe railroad to its namesake city. Fresno River
The Fresno River ( Spanish for "ash tree") is a river in Central California and a major tributary of the San Joaquin River. It runs approximately from the Sierra Nevada Range to the San Joaquin River if measured from the source of Rainier Creek, near Raymond Mountain in Yosemite National Park. Although called the 'Fresno' River, it is one of the largest and longest river systems in Madera County. William Benson Storey
William Benson Storey, Jr. (November 17, 1857 – October 24, 1940) was the fifteenth president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. Storey was born November 17, 1857, in San Francisco, California, the son of William Bainbridge Storey, an express, stagecoach and newspaper agent, and Ellen Dean (Benson) Storey. His family moved around following his father's career until 1866 when they settled in Colfax. in 1876, Storey started his railroad career with the Southern Pacific Railroad as a stake driver on the line between Oakland and Berkeley. He used his earnings from that summer and the following year to finance his college education, and he graduated from the University of California in 1881 with a mechanical engineering degree. He hired out with the Central Pacific Railroad and soon found himself working throughout Idaho, Utah and South Dakota as well as the California coast. Storey (known as Madera by Amtrak) was an unstaffed train station located in the unincorporated community of Storey, and about southeast of the Fresno River, in Madera County, California, United States. Just prior to its closure in November 2010 and replacement by the new Madera station, this station was served by Amtrak's (the National Railroad Passenger Corporation) '' San Joaquin''. Prior to Amtrak, this station was also previously served by Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad's (ATSF) ''San Francisco Chief'' and its Oakland-Barstow Line. Description The Storey Station (Madera) was located at Avenue 15½ at 29th Road. Prior to its removal (following its closure in 2010) the station had one side platform on the southwest side of the southwest track. Madera station is an unstaffed train station near Madera, California, United States that is served by ''San Joaquins'' trains, which run between Oakland or Sacramento and Bakersfield, California. Description The station is located at 18770 Road 26, approximately north of the city limits of Madera, and immediately north of the boundary of Madera Acres. It is easily accessible from Highway 99 (Golden State Highway) by taking the Cleveland Avenue interchange (Exit 155) and then heading east as Cleveland Avenue quickly curves to the north and becomes Country Club Drive. Continue north on Country Club Drive, which eventually becomes Road 26, until the station is reached (at what would be about Avenue 18¾).
