General Sir Montagu George North Stopford, (16 November 1892 – 10 March 1971) was a senior British Army Officer (armed forces), officer who fought during both the First World War, First and Second World Wars. The latter he served in with distinction, commanding XXXIII Corps (British India), XXXIII Indian Corps in the Far East, where he served under General William Slim, 1st Viscount Slim, Sir William Slim, and played a significant role in the Burma Campaign, specifically during the Battle of Kohima in mid-1944. Alice Stopford Green (30 May 1847 – 28 May 1929) was an Irish historian, nationalist, and member of the first Seanad Éireann. Early life She was born Alice Sophia Amelia Stopford in Kells, County Meath. Her father Edward Adderley Stopford was Rector of Kells and Archdeacon of Meath. Her paternal grandfather was Edward Stopford, the Church of Ireland Bishop of Meath, and she was a cousin of Stopford Brooke and Mother Mary Clare. From 1874 to 1877, Alice Stopford lived in London where she met the historian John Richard Green. They were married in Chester on 14 June 1877. He died suddenly in 1883 and left his widow a substantial income and a network of important contacts who helped her launch her own career as an historian and author. One of those contacts, John Morley, commissioned her first solely written historical work, ''Henry the Second'', published in 1888. James George Stopford, 3rd Earl of Courtown KP, PC (15 August 1765 – 15 June 1835), known as Viscount Stopford from 1770 to 1810, was an Anglo-Irish peer and Tory politician. Early life Courtown was the eldest son of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown, and his wife Mary (née Powys). Educated at Eton College, he served with the Coldstream Guards and achieved the rank of captain. Career In 1790, he was elected to the House of Commons for Great Bedwyn, a seat he held until 1796 and again from 1806 to 1807. He also represented Lanark from 1796 to 1802, Dumfries from 1803 to 1806 and Marlborough from 1807 to 1810. Lieutenant General Sir Frederick William Stopford, (2 February 1854 – 4 May 1929) was a British Army officer, best remembered for commanding the landing at Suvla Bay in August 1915, during the Gallipoli Campaign, where he failed to order an aggressive exploitation of the initially successful landings. Early life Stopford was a younger son of James Stopford, 4th Earl of Courtown, and his second wife Dora Pennefather, daughter of Edward Pennefather, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland. James Stopford, 1st Earl of Courtown (1700 – 12 January 1770) was an Irish politician. Courtown was the son of James Stopford, of Courtown, County Wexford, who represented County Wexford in the Irish House of Commons, and his wife Frances (née Jones). He succeeded his father as member of parliament for County Wexford in 1721, a seat he held until 1727, and then represented Fethard (County Wexford) from 1727 to 1758. In 1756, he was appointed High Sheriff of Wexford. In 1758, he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland as Baron Courtown, of Courtown in the County of Wexford. Four years later he was further honoured when he was made Viscount Stopford and Earl of Courtown, in the County of Wexford, also in the Peerage of Ireland. The Stopford Building is the second largest building at The University of Manchester, after the Sackville Street Building. It houses the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health (FBMH). It was built in 1969-72 (architects H. S. Fairhurst & Son). It is now linked on the east side to the Biotech Building of 1999. The cost of the building was £12.5 million and it was described as the largest and most up-to-date in Europe a few years after its completion.
