Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland (known as SMZ or in English as Zeeland Steamship Company ) was a Dutch ferry operator that ran services from the Netherlands to the United Kingdom between 1875 and 1989.Haws (1993), p.197 History The Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland was founded in June 1875 and opened a service from Vlissingen to Sheerness in Kent on July 26 of that year. However, poor support led to the service being suspended for the following winter and re-opened on May 15, 1876 to nearby Queenborough. The service was temporarily transferred to Dover in 1882 following a fire at the Queenborough pier. At the request of the Dutch postal authorities the service was doubled in 1887 but the service suffered further disruption in 1897 due to flooding of the railway to Queenborough and another fire at the pier in 1900. MV Duc De Normandie
MV ''Duc de Normandie'' was a passenger car ferry built in 1978 as the ''Prinses Beatrix''. She subsequently operated under the names ''Wisteria'' and ''Voronskiy''. She was beached in February 2021 and subsequently dismantled. History She was built in 1978 as the ''Prinses Beatrix'' by Verolme Shipyard, in Heusden, the Netherlands and worked for Stoomvaart Maatschappij Zeeland on its joint Sealink route between Hook of Holland and Harwich, Parkeston Quay. She was named and launched by Princess Beatrix on 14 January 1978. Brittany Ferries bought the vessel on 1 October 1985 and, after chartering the vessel for a year back to SMZ, renamed her ''Duc de Normandie'', operating between Portsmouth and Ouistreham from 5 June 1986. Larvik () is a town and municipality in Vestfold in Vestfold og Telemark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Larvik. The ''Moby Prince'' disaster was a major maritime accident resulting in 140 deaths. It occurred in the late evening of Wednesday 10 April 1991, in the harbor of Livorno, Italy. It is the worst disaster in the Italian merchant navy since World War II. It is also considered one of the two worst environmental disasters in Italian history, along with the explosion and loss of the tanker ''Amoco Milford Haven'' on the following day in an unrelated accident near Voltri. MV ''Moby Prince'', a ferry owned by Navigazione Arcipelago Maddalenino (NAVARMA) Lines collided with the oil tanker ''Agip Abruzzo'', sparking an extensive fire that ravaged the ship.
