Stoney 142, 143, 144 is an Indian reserve of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation, comprising Bearspaw First Nation, Bearspaw, Chiniki First Nation, Chiniki, and Wesley First Nation, Wesley First Nations in Alberta, located between the Municipal District of Bighorn No. 8 and Rocky View County. The largest community of the Nakoda (people), Nakoda people, it is 56 kilometers west of Calgary, Alberta, Calgary. The community is spread along both sides of the Trans-Canada Highway, east of Banff National Park and north of Kananaskis Improvement District. Nakoda (Stoney)
The Nakoda (also known as Stoney, , or Stoney Nakoda) are an Indigenous people in Western Canada and the United States. Their territory used to be large parts of what is now Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Montana, but their reserves are now in Alberta and in Saskatchewan, where they are rarely differentiated from the Assiniboine. They refer to themselves in their language as , meaning 'friend, ally'. The name ''Stoney'' was given to them by Anglophone explorers, because of their technique of using fire-heated rocks to boil broth in rawhide bowls. They are very closely related to the Assiniboine, who are also known as Stone Sioux (from ). The Nakoda First Nation in Alberta comprises three bands: Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney. In the days leading up to June 19, 2013, parts of southern and central Alberta, Canada experienced heavy rainfall that triggered catastrophic flooding described by the provincial government as the worst in History of Alberta, Alberta's history.
