Stokkavatnet (Forus)
Stokkavatnet is a former lake that was located at Forus in Stavanger, Norway, between the two fjords Hafrsfjord and Gandsfjord. The lake was among the largest at the Northern Jæren district, with an area of about 4 km2. It was surrounded by considerable areas of marsh land, and was known for a rich birdlife. The lake drained to Gandsfjord, and the outlet supplied six mills located near the fjord. Drainage Plans for draining the area initiated in the 1860s, but the plan was not approved until 1905. The drainage started in 1906. Including the surrounding areas, about 4.5 km2 of new land was cultivated. The land redistribution involved eighty individual farms (eight main farms): Skadberg and Røyneberg (in former Håland, now Sola municipality), Forus, Gausel, Godeset and Jåttå (former Hetland, now Stavanger municipality), and Stokka and Lura (former Høyland, now Sandnes municipality). Forus
Forus is an industrial district in the city of Stavanger which lies in the southwestern part of the large municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the borough of Hinna, along the Gandsfjorden and it stretches south and west to the municipalities of Sandnes and Sola. The name Forus originates from an old farm located in this area, part of which is currently used for harness racing. The drainage of the former lake Stokkavatnet and the surrounding marsh area, from 1906 and onwards, added of new land for the nearby farms. In 1940, at the start of World War II, the German occupants initiated construction of Stavanger Airport on this site. The area was later developed mainly for industrial purposes. Hafrsfjord
Hafrsfjord or Hafrsfjorden is a fjord in the Stavanger Peninsula in Rogaland county, Norway. The long fjord forms the border between the municipalities of Stavanger and Sola. On the west side of the fjord is the large village of Tananger, on the south is the village of Solakrossen, and on the east end of the fjord is the borough of Madla in the city of Stavanger. The Møllebukta bay area, located on the innermost part of the fjord, is the site of a popular beach and the Sverd i Fjell statues. The only bridge over the fjord is the Hafrsfjord Bridge which runs between Kvernevik in Stavanger and Jåsund in the village of Tananger in Sola. Gandsfjord
Gandsfjorden or Gandafjorden is a fjord in Rogaland county, Norway. The long Gandsfjorden is an arm off of the large Boknafjorden. It runs between the mainland and the Stavanger Peninsula in the western parts of the municipalities of Stavanger and Sandnes. The entire west and south side of the Gandsfjorden is highly developed and urban as this is the location of the cities of Stavanger and Sandnes, the third largest urban area in Norway. The east side of the fjord is far less developed and it has many mountains and peaks. Gausel
Gausel is a neighborhood (''delområde'') in the city of Stavanger which lies in the southwestern part of the large municipality of Stavanger in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the borough of Hinna between the neighborhoods of Jåttå, Godeset, and Forus and the Gandsfjorden. History Until the 1980s, Gausel was primary farmland. From the 1990s onwards, increased settlement has taken place, and new service facilities have been built. The Gausel Church was built in 1996.
