Stockport Heritage Magazine
''Stockport Heritage Magazine'' was started in 1987 by two founder members of Stockport Heritage, a voluntary conservation group campaigning to save buildings and traditions in the Borough of Stockport, historically in Cheshire, now within Greater Manchester. The aim of the magazine was to generate interest among the local residents in issues such as the saving of the 15th-century Staircase House, then a derelict eyesore and subsequently restored and opened to the public in 2005 after their successful campaign to enlist the support of public bodies like English Heritage and the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. The magazine was funded by Jean and Steve Cliffe from their own resources, published and edited by themselves and run entirely without official assistance using volunteer writers and researchers as a community publishing venture, written for and by the people of Stockport and district. Stockport Heritage
Stockport Heritage was formed by volunteers in 1987 as a campaigning conservation group to help preserve and regenerate historic and architecturally sensitive buildings in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. Its main work focussed on Staircase House, a 15th-century merchants' warehouse and home with later additions, which had been semi-derelict for a number of years on Stockport's 750-year-old Market Place. The group successfully opposed plans to demolish the house. Stockport Heritage was granted charitable status in 1988, and was renamed Stockport Heritage Trust. The objective of persuading the local civic authorities to take up the Staircase House project was achieved and the House became the flagship of a regeneration scheme for the historic town centre. Staircase House
Staircase House (30/30a Market Place) is a Grade II* listed medieval building dating from around 1460 situated in Stockport, historically in Cheshire, now within Greater Manchester, England. The house is famous for its rare Jacobean cage newel staircase. An audio guide recounts the full history of the house. History Staircase House, (), is in its origins a cruck timber building, with its earliest known surviving timbers dating from 1459 to 1460 on the basis of dendrochronology. Very little is known of the property's early history, though it is thought that it may have been the home of William Dodge who, in 1483, was the Mayor of Stockport. The first residents of whom there is certainty were the Shallcross family who owned the House from 1605 to 1730. English Heritage
English Heritage (officially the English Heritage Trust) is a charity that manages over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places. Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council
Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council is the local authority for the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. The council is currently run by a Liberal Democrat minority administration. At the 2022 local elections, the Liberal Democrats gained two more seats, increasing their lead over the Labour Party to three seats, and took control of the council at the following full council meeting. The Liberal Democrats currently have 28 seats, Labour 24, Conservatives 4, Heald Green Ratepayers 3, and Greens 2. There are now two Independent councillors. Steve Cliffe
Steve Cliffe, a former Stockport councillor, was the founding member of Stockport Heritage and Stockport Heritage Magazine circa 1987. He and his late wife, Jean, co-ordinated the efforts of Stockport Heritage to persuade English Heritage and the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council to support the purchase and restoration of semi-derelict Staircase House, a 15th-century merchant's townhouse, as the town museum. The house was finally restored with a £4 million grant and opened to the public in 2005 as a living example of the development of vernacular architecture. It has since won Civic Trust and architectural awards. In his book, ''Stockport History & Guide'', published in 2005, he details the struggle to get the project off the ground. In February 2018 Steve Cliffe was given a community hero award by Stockport Metropolitan Council for his role in helping save Staircase House and promoting heritage within the borough. Stockport is a town and Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, borough in Greater Manchester, England, south-east of Manchester, south-west of Ashton-under-Lyne and north of Macclesfield. The River Goyt and River Tame, Greater Manchester, Tame merge to create the River Mersey here.
