''Graffiti Bridge'' is the twelfth studio album by American recording artist Prince and is the soundtrack album to the 1990 film of the same name. It was released on August 20, 1990, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album was much better received in sales than the film. It reached number 6 in the United States and was his third consecutive chart-topper (following ''Lovesexy'' and ''Batman'') on the UK Albums Chart. Nearly every song on the record was written by Prince despite the handful of artists performing, including Tevin Campbell, Mavis Staples, and the Time. The album produced the hit singles "Thieves in the Temple" and "New Power Generation", an anthem in two parts celebrating Prince's newly created backing band, the New Power Generation. New Power Generation (song)
"New Power Generation", or "N.P.G.", is a song by American musician Prince from the 1990 album and film '' Graffiti Bridge''. It is an anthem for his backing band, The New Power Generation, who were officially co-credited on his album covers for a time, and continued to back him up until 2013, albeit with a changing lineup. The song saw minimal chart attention, and was not as successful as its predecessor, "Thieves in the Temple". "N.P.G." is a funk number featuring drumming by Morris Day, and vocal help by Rosie Gaines. The track had originally been cut in January of 1982 during the sessions for The Time's '' What Time Is It?'' under the name of "Bold Generation". The track was revisited in 1989, albeit heavily redone with Day's drum track buried in the mix. The funk on the track is cut by some carnival-like organ playing and distorted guitar. ''Controversy'' is the fourth studio album by the American singer-songwriter and musician Prince, released on October 14, 1981, by Warner Bros. Records. With the exception of one track, it was written and produced entirely by Prince. He also performed most of the instruments on its recording. ''Controversy'' reached number three on the ''Billboard'' R&B Albums chart and was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was voted the eighth best album of the year in the 1981 Pazz & Jop, an annual critics poll run by ''The Village Voice''. This was the first of his albums to associate Prince with the color purple as well as the first to use sensational spelling in his song titles. Boni Boyer
Boni Boyer (July 28, 1958 – December 4, 1996) was an American vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. She was best known for her work with Prince in the late 1980s. Life and career Boyer was playing keyboards and singing backing vocals with Sheila E.'s group when Prince was forming a new touring band after the break-up of The Revolution, in 1986. When Sheila E. became the drummer in the new band, she also brought Boyer and her bassist Levi Seacer, Jr. with her. Boyer performed as keyboardist and vocalist on the concert tours for ''Sign o' the Times'' and on the albums and concert tours for ''Lovesexy'' and '' Graffiti Bridge''. Technically Boni Boyer left Prince's band for Australia after the Lovesexy tour was over. Sheila Cecilia Escovedo (born December 12, 1957), known under the stage name Sheila E., is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Regarded as one of the greatest musicians of her generation; she is known for skills as a multi-instrumentalist, often preferring to play drums or percussion. She is sometimes referred to as the "Queen of Percussion". Her music incorporated a wide variety of styles, including R&B, funk, jazz, pop, synth-pop, latin pop, and salsa. The New Power Generation, also known as the NPG, was the backing band of musician Prince from 1990 to 2013. They were replaced by 3rdeyegirl as his backing band in 2013. In 2015, the New Power Generation reunited as Prince's backing band for his final studio album before his death, '' Hit n Run Phase Two''. They reunited once again in 2017 for a US and European tour. Mavis Staples (born July 10, 1939) is an American rhythm and blues and gospel music, gospel singer and civil rights activism, activist. She rose to fame as a member of her family's band The Staple Singers, of which she is the last surviving member. ''Lovesexy'' is the tenth studio album by American recording artist Prince. The album was released on May 10, 1988, by Paisley Park Records and Warner Bros. Records. The album was recorded in just seven weeks, from mid-December 1987 to late January 1988, at Prince's new Paisley Park Studios, after the cancellation of the infamous Black Album and most of the album is a solo effort from Prince, with a few exceptions. The lyrical themes of the record include positivity, self-improvement, spirituality, and God.
