Stiles Clements
Stiles Oliver Clements (March 2, 1883 – January 15, 1966) was an architect practicing in Los Angeles and Southern California. History Clements trained at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He was a key figure in the 1920s Art Deco and 1930s Streamline Moderne architectural movements in Los Angeles. He also designed in Historicism (art), historicist motifs and Revivalism (architecture), revivalism styles, such as the Adamson House in the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, Spanish Colonial Revival and Moorish Revival architecture, Moorish Revival styles. Clements was a partner with Octavius Morgan (architect), Octavius Morgan and John Walls at Morgan, Walls & Clements, known for his exuberant themed designs that included the Mayan Theater, Mayan and Wiltern Theatre, Wiltern theaters, the Richfield Tower, and many others. Mayan Theater
The Mayan Theater in Los Angeles, California, is a landmark former movie palace and current nightclub and music venue. History The Mayan Theater opened in August 1927 as a performance arts theater specializing in musical comedy. Leon Hefflin Sr. rented out the Mayan Theater downtown Los Angeles to produce the Sweet N' Hot, "Greatest Negro All Star Musical to Hit Coast." His business partner was Curtis Mosby, and the featured performer was Dorothy Dandridge. The show had a run of eleven weeks and was reported as going to New York. It closed to rave reviews and was covered by 20 different newspapers all over the country. From 1971 to 1989, the theater was owned by pornographic filmmaker Carlos Tobalina. Hazard's Pavilion
Hazard's Pavilion was a large auditorium in Los Angeles, California, at the intersection of Fifth and Olive Streets. Showman George "Roundhouse" Lehman had planned to construct a large theatre center on the land he purchased at this location, but he went broke and the property was sold to the City Attorney (and soon to be Mayor), Henry T. Hazard. The venue was built in 1887 by architects Kysor, Morgan & Walls at a cost of $25,000, a large amount for the time, and seated up to 4,000 people (some sources say that seating could be up to 8,000; the building was divided into two galleries, and perhaps ''each'' accommodated 4,000). Coulter's was a department store that originated in Downtown Los Angeles and later moved to the Miracle Mile shopping district in that same city. History Coulter's was founded by B. F. Coulter, a minister and entrepreneur from Kentucky, who joined the partnership Coulter & Harper in 1875, selling hardware, homeware and appliances, as well as underwear, at Eighth and Spring streets, moving to 110 Main Street in 1878.
