Stiff Gins
The Stiff Gins are an Indigenous Australian band from Sydney. They call their music "acoustic with harmonies" and are regularly compared to Tiddas (band), Tiddas. The band was formed by Emma Donovan, Nardi Simpson and Kaleena Briggs in 1999, after meeting at the Eora Centre while studying music. The band's name uses the word ''gin'' (a derogatory word for an Aboriginal woman which was also a Dharug language, Dharug word for woman/wife) with the word ''stiff'' to become strong black woman, a name which caused debate about use of the word ''gin''. Kaleena Briggs is a Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta woman and Nardi Simpson Yuwaalaraay woman. The band won The Deadlys, Deadlys in Deadly Awards 2000, 2000 for Most Promising New Talent and in Deadly Awards 2001, 2001 for their single "Morning Star". Dharug Language
The Dharug language, also spelt Darug, Dharuk, and other variants, and also known as the Sydney language, Gadigal language ( Sydney city area), is an Australian Aboriginal language of the Yuin–Kuric group that was traditionally spoken in the region of Sydney, New South Wales, until it became extinct due to effects of colonisation. It is the traditional language of the Dharug people. The Dharug population has greatly diminished since the onset of colonisation. The term Eora language has sometimes been used to distinguish a coastal dialect from hinterland dialects, but there is no evidence that Aboriginal peoples ever used this term, which simply means "people". Tiddas were an all-female folk trio from Victoria, Australia. Biography 1990–1992: Career beginnings and ''Inside My Kitchen'' Originally the three women, Amy Saunders (a Gunditjmara woman from Portland), Lou Bennett (a Yorta Yorta Dja Dja Wurrung woman from Echuca) and Sally Dastey (from West Heidelberg) combined their vocal talents as backing singers for Aboriginal band Djaambi, led by Saunders' brother Richard Frankland in 1990. The group were invited to perform at a musical celebration for women's artistic achievement, 'Hot Jam Cooking', in Richmond, Victoria.
