Stickneys Ferry
Stickneys Ferry was a settlement established in what became Tulare County. The ferry proper was where the Stockton - Los Angeles Stagecoach Road crossed the White River. The settlement was on Telegraph Flat, just below the confluence of the White River and Tyler Gulch, about 4.66 miles west of Tailholt. It would have been established after Robert S. Williamson's 1853-4 report of his expedition for the Pacific Railroad Surveys, which does not mention it, and before the 1857 production of Britton and Rey's Map of California, which does. The ferry transported passengers and cargo travelling on what became the Stockton - Los Angeles Road across the White River. This crossing was on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, south of Fountain Springs and north of Mountain House at Willow Springs in Kern County and was probably founded sometime between 1854 and 1856 to ferry supplies to prospectors involved in the Kern River Gold Rush. Tulare County ( ) is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 473,117. The county seat is Visalia. The county is named for Tulare Lake, once the largest freshwater lake west of the Great Lakes. Drained for agricultural development, the site is now in Kings County, which was created in 1893 from the western portion of the formerly larger Tulare County. Tulare County comprises the Visalia- Porterville, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is located south of Fresno, spanning from the San Joaquin Valley east to the Sierra Nevada. Sequoia National Park is located in the county, as is part of Kings Canyon National Park, in its northeast corner (shared with Fresno County), and part of Mount Whitney, on its eastern border (shared with Inyo County). White River is a little unincorporated community in Tulare County, ten miles east of Delano, California Delano ( ) is a city in Kern County, California, United States. Delano is located about north-northwest of Bakersfield, California, Bakersfield at an elevation of . The population was 51,428 in 2020, down from 53,041 in 2010. It is Kern Count ..., United States. It was founded as a gold camp in 1856, during the Kern River Gold Rush. It was first located on the Coarse Gold Gulch two miles west of the present site and was called Dogtown. When the first road was built to Linn's Valley, Dogtown was moved a mile and a half west to the road. The Pacific Railroad Surveys (1853–1855) were a series of explorations of the American West designed to find and document possible routes for a transcontinental railroad across North America. The expeditions included surveyors, scientists, and artists and resulted in an immense body of data covering at least on the American West. White River (California)
The White River is a small river in the southern San Joaquin Valley of the U.S. state of California. The river is long and flows entirely within Tulare County. It rises at roughly above sea level in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada on the northwest slope of Bull Run Peak. It flows west, receiving several seasonal tributaries including Arrastre Creek, Coarse Gold Creek and Coho Creek, passing the small settlement of White River. As it nears the border of Tulare County and Kern County its surface flow disappears. The dry riverbed continues northwest into the agricultural San Joaquin Valley and is diverted into canals for flood control and irrigation purposes. Fountain Springs, California
Fountain Springs was a settlement established in Tulare County, California, before 1855, at the junction of the Stockton–Los Angeles Road and the road to the Kern River gold mines. From 1858 to 1861, Fountain Springs was a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route, southeast of Tule River Station and north of Mountain House. The site of the settlement was northwest of the California Historical Landmark No. 648 on the southwest corner of County Roads J22 and M 109 (old Springville Stage Route) in Tulare County.
