Stewartry RFC
Stewartry RFC is a rugby union side based in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.They field a Men's 1XV, Women's 1XV and 7 youth sides from S1 to S6. They play their home games at Greenlaw. History There was a previous Stewartry rugby club, active in the 1920s. They played their last game in 1930. They played at Kirkchrist Park. The present club was founded in 1970. The Women's XV are known as the Stewartry Sirens. They are very successful; having won the National Plate competition on three occasions, as well as going undefeated in West Region Division 1 in 2022/23 to gain promotion into the Scottish Premiership. The Men's XV play against Annan RFC for the Chisholm Cup; the local derby match. Castle Douglas
Castle Douglas ( gd, Caisteal Dhùghlais) is a town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It lies in the lieutenancy area of Kirkcudbrightshire, in the eastern part of Galloway, between the towns of Dalbeattie and Gatehouse of Fleet. It is in the ecclesiastical parish of Kelton. History Castle Douglas is built next to Carlingwark Loch in which traces of prehistoric crannogs can be found, evidence of early inhabitation of the area. A large bronze cauldron containing about 100 metal objects was found in Carlingwark Loch near Fir Island about 1866. The hoard of tools of iron and bronze is probably Romano-Belgic of the late first or early second centuries AD and is likely to have been a votive offering. Glasgow Warriors are a professional rugby union side from Scotland. The team plays in the United Rugby Championship league and in the European Professional Club Rugby tournaments. In the 2014–15 season they won the Pro12 title and became the first Scottish team to win a major trophy in rugby union's professional era. Stafford McDowall (born 24 February 1998) is a Scottish professional rugby union player for Glasgow Warriors. His usual position is at the centre position, though he can also cover at full back. Rugby Union career Amateur career McDowall started his rugby career at Kirkcudbright Academy and Stewartry RFC then Merchiston Castle School. He made a Glasgow Warriors U17 side in August 2014. From there he played for Edinburgh U18 and then switched back to play for Glasgow U20. McDowall now plays for Ayr. He was Ayr's Young Player of the Season for 2016-17. Joe Ansbro (Born Glasgow, 29 October 1985) is a former Scottish international professional rugby union player. He is the first player of African origin to represent Scotland at test level in history. His favoured position is centre. He most recently played for London Irish. After gaining 11 full international caps his rugby career ended due to serious neck injury at the age of 26. Early years Ansbro was born in Glasgow and raised near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries & Galloway, South West Scotland.
