Stewart McSweyn
Stewart "Stewie" McSweyn (born 1 June 1995) is an Australian long-distance runner. He was a finalist in the men's 1500 metres in the Tokyo Olympics, and has also been a World Championships and Commonwealth Games finalist in the 3000 metres steeplechase, 5000 metres and 10,000 metres. Career Early years McSweyn grew up on a beef and sheep farm on King Island (population ~1,600) in the middle of Bass Strait, south of Melbourne, Victoria. There was no high school on the island, so he boarded at Ballarat in Victoria. Being away from home at a young age, he built resilience which helps him cope with being overseas for lengthy periods of time. Up until he was 14 years old, he played cricket, tennis and Australian rules football, but he then decided to concentrate on athletics. Burnie Ten
The Burnie Ten is an Australian 10 km road race held on a Sunday in October every year in Burnie in North West Tasmania along Emu Bay (Tasmanian geographic feature), Emu Bay. Route The race starts north of Wilson/Cattley Street intersection and proceeds south along Wilson Street to the Bass Highway, Tasmania, Bass Highway. It follows the highway east, past the Burnie Yacht Club and Wivenhoe, Tasmania, Wivenhoe to the five kilometer turning point, then returns along the same route to the start-finish line. In 2015, a 5k run, 5km event was added with 489 participating in the five kilometre event with the half way point near the Emu River (Tasmania), Emu River. In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic the event was held virtually, with entrants able to complete the race in their own time on either 17 or 18 October. Long-distance Running
Long-distance running, or endurance running, is a form of continuous running over distances of at least . Physiologically, it is largely aerobic in nature and requires stamina as well as mental strength. Within endurance running come two different types of respiration. The more prominent side that runners experience more frequently is aerobic respiration. This occurs when oxygen is present, and the body can utilize oxygen to help generate energy and muscle activity. On the other side, anaerobic respiration occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen, and this is common towards the final stretch of races when there is a drive to speed up to a greater intensity. 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships
The 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships took place on 18 February 2023 in Bathurst, Australia. It was the event's 44th edition and the second time after Auckland in 1988 that the championships were held in Oceania. In March 2020 the course was revealed, to be held in the infield of the Mount Panorama Circuit. In December 2020, the event was postponed from 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Australian travel restrictions. The championships were once again delayed to 2023 in September 2021, due to Australian travel restrictions.
