Steve Smith (infielder)
Steven John Smith (born July 21, 1952) is an American former professional baseball player and coach. He recently served as the third base coach for the Cincinnati Reds of Major League Baseball (MLB). He has also held the same position with the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cleveland Indians. He has also been a minor league manager in the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners, and Milwaukee Brewers organizations. Baseball career Playing career As a player, Smith was primarily a second baseman and shortstop, though he played a few games at third base and even made one appearance as a pitcher. He played in the San Diego Padres organization from 1976 to 1982, playing for the Single-A Walla Walla Padres and Reno Silver Sox, the Double-A Amarillo Gold Sox, and the Triple-A Hawaii Islanders. Infielder
An infielder is a baseball player stationed at one of four defensive "infield" positions on the baseball field, between first base and third base. Standard arrangement of positions In a game of baseball, two teams of nine players take turns playing offensive and defensive roles. Although there are many rules to baseball, in general the team playing offense tries to score runs by batting balls into the field that enable runners to make a complete circuit of the four bases. The Walla Walla Padres were the primary name of a minor league baseball team in the northwest United States, located in Walla Walla, Washington. The Tacoma Rainiers are a Minor League Baseball team of the Pacific Coast League (PCL) and the Triple-A (baseball), Triple-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners. Calgary Cannons
The Calgary Cannons were a minor league baseball team located in Calgary, Alberta, for 18 seasons, from 1985 until 2002. They were a member of the Triple-A (baseball), AAA Pacific Coast League (PCL) and played at Foothills Stadium. The Cannons displaced the Calgary Expos, who played in the rookie league, rookie level Pioneer League (baseball), Pioneer League from 1977 until 1984. The Peninsula Pilots are an Amateur baseball in the United States, amateur baseball team in the Coastal Plain League, Collegiate summer baseball, collegiate summer baseball league. Beaumont Golden Gators
The Beaumont Golden Gators were a minor league baseball team in the double A Texas League from 1983 to 1986. Owned by insurance man Ted Moor, the team was an affiliate of the San Diego Padres for their entire tenure. Future Major League Baseball players John Kruk, Roberto Alomar, Joey Cora, Ozzie Guillén, Sandy Alomar Jr., Shane Mack, and Benito Santiago all played at one time for the Golden Gators. The team played its home games at Vincent-Beck Stadium on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas and won the 1983 Texas League championship. Their uniforms were a gaudy gold, white, and green and the hats were of the historic pillbox variety with a white B surrounded by a golden triangle. The Reno Silver Sox were a minor league baseball team that existed on and off from 1947 to 1992. The team name is derived from the nickname of Nevada, the "Silver State".
