Steve Knight (pool Player)
Steve Knight (12 July 1973 – 13 January 2019) was an English professional pool player. Knight spent four times representing the European team at the Mosconi Cup and was the winner of the 2000 World Pool League. Career Knight's first major competition was at the 1997 World Pool Masters, reaching the second round of the competition. The following year he reached the quarter-finals of the event. Knight's best result at a world championship was at the 1999 World Professional Pool Championship, reaching the quarter-finals, before losing to Chao Fong-Pang. In 2000, Knight reached the last 16 of the 2000 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, before losing to former champion Kunihiko Takahashi 9–0. He would compete once again in the World Pool Masters, this time reaching the semi-final. Knight has also competed at the Mosconi Cup on four occasions. He played for the team between 1998 and 2001. Chao Fong-Pang
Chao Fong-pang (; born 15 September 1967 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan) is a Taiwanese professional pool player. Career He won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship in 1993 against Thomas Hasch of Germany. Thus, he became the first male Chinese Taipei player to win a world championship in pocket billiards. In 1995, he won the International Challenge of Champions against Japan's Takeshi Okumura, who was won the 1994 world champion in nine-ball. Three year later, he won the gold medal in the eight-ball event of the Asian Games. Chao regained the World Nine-ball Championship for the second time in 2000 by defeating Mexico's Ismael Paez, 17–6. The score was the largest winning margin ever made in a World Championship final. Kunihiko Takahashi
(born March 4, 1969 in Nagasaki) is a Japanese professional pool player and a WPA World Nine-ball Champion. Nicknamed "the Sniper". He began practicing pool at 17 and turned professional in 1996. In 1998, he won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship by defeating the reigning champion, Johnny Archer, in the final match. He became the second World Nine-ball Champion from Japan, after Takeshi Okumura, who won it in 1994. In that same year, Takahashi won the ESPN Ultimate Shootout, earning him US$40,000. Four years later, Takahashi was three stages away from a second world title when he lost to Earl Strickland Earl Strickland (born June 8, 1961) is an American professional pool player who is considered one of the best nine-ball players of all time. 2000 WPA World Nine-ball Championship
The 2000 WPA World Nine-ball Championship was the 11th edition of the WPA World Championship for 9-Ball Pool. It took place from July 1 to 7, 2000 in Cardiff, Wales. Chao Fong-pang won the event, defeating Mexican Ismael Páez in the final, winning 17–6. Efren Reyes and Nick Varner were the two defending champions going into the event, but both lost in the 1st Round. Format The 96 participating players were divided into 16 groups, in which they competed in round robin mode against each other. The top four players in each group qualified for the final round played in the knockout system. Prize money The event's prize money stayed similar to that of the previous years, with winner Mika Immonen winning $65,000. Preliminary round The following 16 players finished fifth in their group. 1999 World Professional Pool Championship
The 1999 World Pool Championship was a professional pool championship that took place in 1999 in Cardiff, Wales. The event was billed as a world championship by Matchroom Sport as an alternative to the World Pool-Billiard Association's 1999 WPA World Nine-ball Championship, won by Nick Varner. Despite there being two world titles for the same discipline in 1999, both are considered as valid in 1999 by the WPA. The event was won by Efren Reyes, who defeated Chang Hao-ping in the final 17–8. At the time of the event, it was not recognised as a world championship, however, after the event was well received, the WPA worked with Matchroom Sport to sponsor and present later versions of the event, and the 1999 event was retrospectively recognised as a world championship. The championships were merged in 2000, but were also held in Wales. Nine-ball (sometimes written 9-ball) is a discipline of the cue sport pool. The game's origins are traceable to the 1920s in the United States. It is played on a rectangular billiard table with at each of the four corners and in the middle of each long side. World Pool Masters
The World Pool Masters is an annual international nine-ball tournament. Formerly, it was called the European Pool Masters (until 1995) until players from other parts of the globe were invited. History Throughout much of its history, the tournament has been featuring sixteen world-class pool players, competing in single-elimination format. In 2010, the number of players was doubled to 32. The first round of the event was played in double elimination with the second round in single-elimination. In 2011, the tournament reverted to the original 16-player single-elimination format, with each match a race-to-8, winner breaks. The 2011 edition was held in SM North EDSA Mall in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
