Sterns Nightclub
Sterns was a nightclub located at Highdown Towers on Highdown Hill in Worthing, West Sussex. It was situated off the A259 road just north of Ferring on the South Downs. It became known as a major centre of UK rave culture in the south of England during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was a rare example of an early UK club boasting 4 separate rooms with DJs playing House music, house, breakbeat hardcore, Drum and bass, jungle music, techno, Progressive electronic music, progressive house and UK hard house, hard house. Although Sterns had played such music before and was a forerunner in underground parties, the most famous club nights were started in 1991 by a promoter (entertainment), promoter named In-ter-dance run by the late Mensa (In-Ter-Dance), Mensa. Stern's was a regional department store chain serving the U.S. states of New York and New Jersey. The chain was in business for more than 130 years. In 2001, Stern's parent company Federated Department Stores opted to retire the Stern's brand. Most of the stores were immediately converted to Stern's corporate sibling Macy's, some were liquidated and reopened as Bloomingdale's, and others were closed. History Stern Brothers was founded in 1867 by Isaac, Louis and Benjamin Stern, sons of German Jewish immigrants. In that year, they began selling dry goods in Buffalo, New York. From these humble beginnings, the Stern Brothers became an important merchandising family in New York City. In 1868, they moved to New York City and opened a one-room store at 367 Sixth Avenue. Stern's Pickle Works, headquartered at 111 Powell Place off Melville Road in Farmingdale, New York, was the last remaining pickle factory on Long Island from the 19th century. History In 1888, Jarvis Andrew Lattin (1853–1941) started a pickle and sauerkraut factory in Farmingdale, New York. There were many pickling companies already established in the area. He had a house built on the land next to the factory. The factory in 1894 was sold to Aaron Stern and it became the "Stern and Lattin Pickle Company" and in 1914 "Stern and Brauner". It was also listed as "Stern Pickle Products, Inc." and "Stern's Pickle Works". It was at 111 Powell Place off Melville Road and lasted until 1985.
