William Nylander (botanist)
William (Wilhem) Nylander (3 January 1822 – 29 March 1899) was a Finnish botanist and entomologist. Nylander was born in Oulu, and taught at the University of Helsinki before moving to Paris, where he lived until his death in 1899. Nylander studied medicine, receiving a degree in 1847. Nylander pioneered the technique of determining the taxonomy of lichens by the use of chemical reagents, such as potassium hydroxide, tinctures of iodine and calcium hypochlorite, still used by lichenologists as the K and C tests. Nylander was the first to realise the effect of atmospheric pollution on the growth of lichens, an important discovery that paved the way for the use of lichens to detect pollution and determine the cleanness of air. His brother Fredrik Nylander Fredrik Nylander (9 September 1820 – 29 September 1880) was a Finnish physician and botanist who was among the first to study the plants of Finland, describing about eleven new species. Lichenicolous Fungus
A lichenicolous fungus is a parasitic fungus that only lives on lichen as the host. A lichenicolous fungus is not the same as the fungus that is the component of the lichen, which is known as a lichenized fungus. They are most commonly specific to a given fungus as the host, but they also include a wide range of pathogens, saprotrophs, and commensals. It is estimated there are 3000 species of lichenicolous fungi. More than 1800 species are already described among the Ascomycota and Basidiomycota.Lichenicolous Fungi: Interactions, Evolution, and Biodiversity, Lawrey, James D.; Diederich, Paul. The Bryologist 106(1), pp. 80 120, 2003/ref> More than 95% of lichenicolous fungi described as of 2003 are ascomycetes, in 7 classes and 19 orders Order, ORDER or Orders may refer to: * Categorization, the process in which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated, and understood * Heterarchy, a system of organization wherein the elements have the potential to be ranked a number o ... ''Catillaria'' is a genus of crustose lichens in the family Catillariaceae. The genus was circumscribed by Italian lichenologist Abramo Bartolommeo Massalongo in 1852. It is the type genus of Catillariaceae, which was circumscribed by Austrian lichenologist Josef Hafellner in 1984. Cercidospora Stereocaulorum
''Cercidospora stereocaulorum'' is a species of lichenicolous fungus in the genus ''Cercidospora'' but it has not been assigned to a family. It is known to parasitise lichens of the genus ''Stereocaulon''. Similar species Cercidospora stereocaulorum is very similar to ''Cercidospora punctillata'' and '' Cercidospora decolorella'' but they can be told apart from their spore biology and their host species. ''Cercidospora punctillata'' grows on various lichens, most commonly '' Solorina crocea'' and species of ''Peltigera''. while '' Cercidospora decolorella'' grows on mosses. '' Cercidospora alpina'' also grows on species of ''Stereocaulon'' and can therefore be confused with ''Cercidospora stereocaulorum''. Distribution ''Cercidospora stereocaulorum'' has been reported from Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Russia, including Wrangel Island and Svalbard. Host species and symptoms It grows on phyllocladia, stems and occasionally cephalodia and old apothecia of its host species ... Lichen Species
A lichen ( , ) is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship.Introduction to Lichens – An Alliance between Kingdoms . University of California Museum of Paleontology. Lichens have properties different from those of their component organisms. They come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but are not s.
