Stepping Hill (Stockport Electoral Ward)
Stepping Hill is an electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. It elects three Councillors to Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council using the first past the post electoral method, electing one Councillor every year without election on the fourth. The ward is bordered by Hazel Grove, Bramhall North, Davenport & Cale Green, Manor and Offerton. Located within the ward is Stepping Hill Hospital, which is Stockport's only hospital and treats over 500,000 patients a year. Together with Bramhall North, Bramhall South, Cheadle and Gatley, Cheadle Hulme North, Cheadle Hulme South, and Heald Green wards it makes up the Cheadle Parliamentary Constituency. Cheadle is a borough constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first-past-the-post voting system. It is a marginal seat between the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. From 1970 until 2001, it was held by the Conservatives, after which it was held by the Liberal Democrats from 2001 until the 2015 general election, when it was taken back by the Conservatives. The 2022 Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council election took place 5 May 2022 to elect members of Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. This was on the same day as other local elections. 21 of the 63 seats were up for election. Background Stockport began as a Conservative council, with Conservative majorities from 1975 to 1982. The Liberal Democrats ( Liberal Party from 1973 to 1988) overtook the Conservatives in 1992, and formed their first administration in 1999, before another period of no overall control from 2000 to 2002 with the second Liberal Democrat majority lasting until 2011.
