Stephen Vincent Benét (general)
Brigadier General Stephen Vincent Benét (January 22, 1827 – January 22, 1895) was a career officer in the United States Army and served as the 8th Chief of Ordnance for the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. Early life Stephen Vincent Benét was born in St. Augustine, Florida, on 22 January 1827, the son of a prominent political figure of Spanish descent. His grandfather, a native of Minorca, had settled in St. Augustine toward the end of the 18th century, and a great uncle had been a captain in the Spanish Navy. At the age of 12, young Benét entered a private school in Alexandria, Virginia, where he compiled an outstanding record over a period of several years. On the strength of this background, he was admitted to the University of Georgia as a junior, but left before completing his course to enter West Point in June 1845. Daniel Webster Flagler (June 20, 1835 – March 29, 1899) was a United States Army Brigadier General. He was prominent as the Army's 9th Chief of Ordnance for the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. Early life Flagler was appointed to the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York in 1856. He graduated fifth in the class of 1861 and was appointed a second lieutenant of ordnance. Civil War Flagler's first Civil War assignment was to teach drill and ceremony and other basic skills to newly raised volunteers in Washington, D.C. He served as aide to David Hunter in the Manassas Campaign, and fought during the First Battle of Bull Run. He next served as aide to Irvin McDowell in the defense of Washington. After serving at the Allegheny Arsenal, he participated in Ambrose Burnside's North Carolina expedition. Sandy Hook Proving Ground
The Sandy Hook Proving Ground was a military facility along the Atlantic coast of New Jersey established by the Secretary of War on August 7, 1874, to serve as the United States Army's first proving ground for the testing of ordnance and materiel. The facility was located at Sandy Hook, a narrow coastal spit of land, approximately in length and 0.5 miles (varying between 0.1 and 1 miles) wide, in Middletown Township in Monmouth County. The facility was operated in conjunction with the adjoining Fort Hancock. Essentially abandoned in 1919 for a larger facility, the area was left to degrade and most of the structures still remain today. The proving ground and parts of Fort Hancock are now property of the National Park Service and mostly closed to the public. The Parrott rifle was a type of muzzle-loading rifled artillery weapon used extensively in the American Civil War. Parrott rifle The gun was invented by Captain Robert Parker Parrott, a West Point graduate. He was an American soldier and inventor of military ordnance.
