Stephen Prescott
Stephen Prescott (26 December 1973 – 9 November 2013) was a professional rugby league footballer who played as a during the 1990s and 2000s. Prescott made his début for St Helens in 1993, and soon established himself as the club's first choice fullback. He made his senior international début in 1996, playing both games for England in their 1996 European Championship victory, and touring with Great Britain in the Southern Hemisphere. In the same year, he also helped St Helens win the Championship (Super League I) and Challenge Cup for the first time in two decades. He went on to win a second consecutive Challenge Cup with the club in 1997, but was sold to Hull Sharks at the end of the season. After spending two years at Hull, Prescott joined Wakefield Trinity in 2000, but re-joined Hull a year later after being released by Wakefield Trinity due to the club's financial difficulties. St Helens, Merseyside
St Helens () is a town in Merseyside, England, with a population of 117,308. It is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens which had a population of 183,200 at the United Kingdom Census 2021, 2021 Census. The year 1996's Stones Bitter Super League I was the official name for the 102nd season of top-level rugby league football, and the first year of Europe's new championship: Super League. Replay (sports)
A replay (also called a rematch) is the repetition of a match in many sports. Association football In association football, replays were often used to decide the winner in a knock-out tournament when the previous match ended in a draw, especially in finals. In 1970, FIFA (the worldwide governing body of the sport) and International Football Association Board, IFAB (the international rules committee for the sport) allowed Penalty shoot-out (association football), penalty shoot-outs to be held if a match ended in a draw after extra time. The penalty shootout made its appearance immediately thereafter. The first instance of a shootout replacing a replay (rather than lots) was the final of the UEFA Euro 1976 Final, 1976 European championship. League Cup (rugby League)
The Regal Trophy was an annual knock-out competition for British rugby league, rugby league football clubs. Organised by the Rugby Football League (RFL), the competition was open to all professional clubs in the British rugby league system, but amateur teams and French clubs also took part at various points during its existence. First held in 1971–72 League Cup (rugby league), 1971–72, the tournament was initially played over five rounds. A preliminary round was added in 1981–82 League Cup (rugby league), 1981–82 to accommodate the increasing number of professional teams in the sport. The fixtures were normally played during the early part of the season, with the final usually taking place at a neutral venue in January. Batley Bulldogs
The Batley Bulldogs are an English professional rugby league club in Batley, West Yorkshire, who play in the Championship. Batley were one of the original twenty-two rugby football clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895. They were League Champions in 1924 and have won three Challenge Cups. History Early years Batley Cricket Club decided to have a rugby football side merge with them at their ground under the name ''Batley Cricket Athletic and Football Club''. The 1994–95 Rugby Football League season was the 100th ever season of professional rugby league football in Britain. Sixteen teams competed from August 1994 until May 1995 for a number of titles, primarily the Stones Bitter Championship. Dave Lyon (rugby League)
David Lyon (born 3 September 1965) is an English former professional rugby league and rugby union footballer who played as a for Widnes, Warrington, St Helens, Sheffield Eagles and the Leigh Centurions. He switched to rugby union in 1996 and finished his playing career with Orrell. He is the son of Geoff Lyon the former Wigan RLFC great who played at Wigan from 1959 to 1969. Playing career Widnes Lyon started his professional rugby league career with Widnes, joining the club from amateur side Wigan St Patricks in September 1983. He made his debut for the club on Boxing Day in 1983, starting at in place of the injured Mick Burke. Warrington Lyon signed for Warrington in August 1987. The transfer fee was set at £12,500 by an independent tribunal after the two clubs failed to agree a fee.
