Stephen A. Mahin
Stephen A. Mahin (born Lodi, California; October 18, 1946 – February 10, 2018) was an American structural engineer. Mahin was a graduate of the Pacific Grove High School. Following his high school graduation, he attended the University of California, Berkeley, earning his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in civil engineering there. Upon earning his Ph.D, Mahin became an assistant research engineer at Berkeley before joining the faculty in 1974. In 2014, Tongji University of Shanghai, China named Steve Mahin a Master Academician, a title which is given to the top 100 professors internationally in all fields by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Mahin later became the Byron L. and Elvira E. Nishkian Professor of Structural Engineering, and led the Structural Engineering, Mechanics, and Materials Program, as well as the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center. Lodi, California
Lodi ( ) is a city located in San Joaquin County, California, in the center portion of California's Central Valley. The population was 62,134 at the 2010 census. The estimated population is approximately 67,586 according to 2019 census data. Lodi is the 132nd largest city in California based on official 2019 estimates from the US Census Bureau. Lodi is best known for wine grape production, although its vintages have historically been less prestigious than those of Sonoma and Napa counties. However, in recent years, the Lodi Appellation has become increasingly respected for its Zinfandel and other eclectic wine varietals, along with its focus on sustainability under the Lodi Rules program. Norman Medal
The Norman Medal is the highest honor granted by the American Society of Civil Engineers for a technical paper that "makes a definitive contribution to engineering science". The medal was instituted by ASCE in 1872 and originally endowed by George H. Norman, M.ASCE. In 1897, ASCE assumed responsibility for the Norman Medal. National Natural Science Foundation Of China
The National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC; ) is an organization directly affiliated to China's State Council for the management of the National Natural Science Fund. History NSFC was founded in February 1986 by theoretical chemist Tang Aoqing, with the approval of the State Council. It is an institution for the management of the National Natural Science Fund, aimed at promoting and financing basic research and applied research in China. In 2010 NSFC launched a medical department, analogous to the United States' National Institutes of Health. Plans for a medical department had been announced in 2001, but only with the 2008 appointment of Chen Zhu as health minister did basic biomedical research gain enough political support to push the department forward. Earthquake engineering is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering that designs and analyzes structures, such as buildings and bridges, with earthquakes in mind. Its overall goal is to make such structures more resistant to earthquakes. An earthquake (or seismic) engineer aims to construct structures that will not be damaged in minor shaking and will avoid serious damage or collapse in a major earthquake.
