Stepan Shagaida
Stepan Vasilievich Shagaida ( uk, Степан Васильович Шагайда, real name Stepan Shagardin; January 9, 1896 in the village Belogolovy (now Ternopil region, Ukraine) – January 12, 1938 in Kharkiv) was a Ukrainian Soviet theater and film actor. Biography He served in the Red Army from 1920 until 1922. His stage career began during the years of the Russian Civil War in the regimental Drama Theatre of the 45th Infantry Division. In 1922, he studied at the Drama Studio theater ''Berezil'' (now Kharkiv Taras Shevchenko Ukrainian Academic Drama Theatre). He began acting in films in 1924. In 1928, he became an actor of the Odessa and Kiev studios. He appeared in the films of Les Kurbas and Alexander Dovzhenko (The writer and director of Aerograd (1935)). ''Karmelyuk'' ( uk, Кармелюк), also ''Karmyuk'', ''False Uniforms'' and ''From the Life of Karmalyuk'') is a 1931 Ukrainian Soviet feature silent historical drama film directed by Faust Lopatinsky, shot at the Ukrainfilm studio. The plot of the film is based on the play "Robbiynyk Karmelyuk" (1926) and the 1865 short story by Marko Vovchok and was adapted for the screen by Stanislav Weiting-Radzinsky. The film stars Stepan Shagaida, Aleksandr Podorozhnyy, and Zinayida Pihulovych. The score to the film was composed by Borys Lyatoshynsky. After the critical lambasting of his film ''Earth'' by the Soviet authorities, Dovzhenko returned with a more popular iteration of its main motifs. Oleksandr-Zenon Stepanovych Kurbas ( ua , Олександр-Зенон Степанович Курбас; 24 February 1887– 30 November 1937), was a Ukrainian movie and theater director. He is considered by many to be the most important Ukrainian theater director of the 20th century.
