Stenhammarella
''Stenhammarella'' is a fungal genus that contains a single species, ''Stenhammarella turgida'', a saxicolous (rock-dwelling) crustose lichen. This lichen grows on limestone rocks in alpine environments and is found in Europe and China. It was first described in 1810 by the Swedish lichenologist Erik Acharius, the "father of lichenology". The lichen has a chalky, greyish body (the thallus) with distinctive reproductive structures (apothecia) that change appearance as the organism matures. Initially classified under various names and genera, it was given its own genus, ''Stenhammarella'', in 1967. Modern genetic studies have placed it in the Lecideaceae family of fungi, revealing its close relationship to lichens in the genus '' Porpidia''. The Lecideaceae are a family (biology), family of lichen-forming fungi in the order Lecideales. It contains about 30 genus, genera and roughly 250 species. Hannes Hertel
Hannes Hertel is a German lichenologist and taxonomist and was Director of the State Herbarium in Munich, Germany 1992–2004. His specialist areas are the fungi and lichens. Early life and education Hannes Hertel was born in 1939. His doctorate was awarded in 1967 for work on members of the lichen genus ''Lecidea'' that thrive on lime rich rocks and sites. This was undertaken under the guidance of Josef Poelt. Career He was appointed to an academic post at University of Berlin in 1972 but in 1973 he moved to Munich to take up the post of curator at the State Herbarium in Munich. He became the provisional director from 1985 to 1992 and was then confirmed as Director and remained until his retirement in 2004. His specialist area was the taxonomy of lichens, and especially the genus ''Lecidea'' that he had first studied for his doctorate. Johann Christoph Schleicher
Johann Christoph Schleicher (26 February 1768 - 27 August 1834) was a Swiss botanist, bryologist, mycologist, pteridologist and algologist of German origin. He founded a botanical garden in Bex, and a herbarium trade. Biography He was born on 26 February 1770 (according to other sources - in 1768) in the family of Anna Maria Savitsky. He was adopted by Karl Schleicher after the death of his father. In 1797 he married Julie Ricou, daughter of the physician Jean-David Ricou. Schleicher settled in Bévieux sur Bex around 1800, where he worked in a pharmacy. He was also the owner of a company selling plants and herbarium specimens. He created the first botanical garden in the canton of Vaud in the city of Bevieux and is considered to be the inventor of the commercial catalogs of plants, of which he published the first copy of 76 pages in 1800.
