Steinheim (; ) is a town in Höxter (district), Höxter district in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The middle centre of Steinheim forms the economic, cultural and social hub of the ''Steinheimer Börde'', one of the main territories of the old Prince-Bishopric of Paderborn. This territory was known as Wethi-Weizengau in Saxon times. Particularly scenic are the foothills of the Eggegebirge. Geography Location Steinheim lies roughly 15 km southeast of Detmold. Steinheim an der Murr (, ) is a town in the district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated on the river Murr, 9 km northeast of Ludwigsburg. It is known worldwide for the Steinheim skull, the skull of an early human found there in 1933. This human lived around 250,000 years ago. The original skull is kept in the museum of nature in Stuttgart, while in Steinheim, visitors can see two reproductions of the skull in a small museum. Solomon Ludwig (Levy) Steinheim (pseudonym: ''Abadjah Ben Amos''; 1789–1866) was a German physician, poet, and philosopher. Biography Steinheim was born on 6 August 1789 in Altona (according to some authorities, in Bruchhausen, Westphalia). He was educated first at the Gymnasium Christianeum, Altona, and pursued his medical studies at the University of Kiel. He had hardly graduated when he found a wide field for his activity in Altona, to where the inhabitants of the sister city of Hamburg, then occupied by the French troops, had fled to escape the Russian blockade, bringing with them typhus fever, which at that time was raging in the Hanseatic town. In 1845 ill health forced him to abandon a medical career and to move to a milder climate. He settled in Rome, returning to his country only twice, in 1845 and 1864.
