Stefan Żeromski Park (Szczecin)
The Stefan Żeromski Park, until 1945 known as the Grabowo Gardens, is an urban park and arboretum in Szczecin, Poland. It is located in the Old Town, Szczecin, Old Town neighborhood, within the Śródmieście, Szczecin, Downtown district, between Matejki, Malczewskiego, Parkowa, Kapitańska, Storrady, Wawelska, Starzyńskiego, and Zygmunta Starego Streets. With an area of 21.97 ha, it is the second largest park in the city. It was established in 1910, in place of the former Grabowo Cemetery. Name The park is named after Stefan Żeromski, a 19th- and 20th-century novelist and dramatist. Before 1945, it was known as the Grabowo Gardens (German: ''Grabower Anlagen''). Karl Ludwig Manzel (3 June 1858, Neu Kosenow – 20 June 1936, Berlin) was a German sculptor, painter and graphic artist. Life His father was a tailor and his mother was a midwife. The family moved twice, first to Boldekow then, in 1867, to Anklam where he attended the Gymnasium. It was there that he first expressed a desire to study art, but this was not supported by his parents. Frederick III (Friedrich Wilhelm Nikolaus Karl; 18 October 183115 June 1888), or Friedrich III, was German Emperor and King of Prussia for 99 days between March and his death in June 1888, during the Year of the Three Emperors. The equestrian statue of Frederick III (; ) was a monument in Szczecin, Poland, placed at the current Adam Mickiewicz Square, at the southwestern end of the Stefan Żeromski Park. Szczecin Voivodeship Office is a historic administrative building, opened in 1911 and located at the Chrobry Embankment in the city of Szczecin, Poland. History The main designer was Berlin architect Paul Kieschke. After his death in 1905, Paul Lehmgrübner continued the project and supervised the construction. Work began in 1906 on a 12860 m2 site, purchased for 392,000 marks. Because of the site's topography and the remnants of Fort Leopold, which had previously occupied the location, construction was preceded by large-scale earthworks. These included, among others, the construction of a moat bridge, the replacement of peat substrate, and drainage works. The building was built on the powerful, concrete foundations in places reaching 11 m below street level.
