Stavros Malas
Stavros Malas (; born 10 June 1967) is a Cypriot geneticist, academic and politician who served in the government of Cyprus as health minister from 2011 to 2012. Previously, he was a Special Advisor to the European Commissioner for Health from 2008 to 2009. Malas was appointed to the government of Cyprus as Minister of Health in August 2011. In June 2012, he decided to run as an independent candidate for the 2013 presidential election. In September 2012 he was officially declared as an independent candidate with the backing of AKEL. Having placed second in the first round of the elections with 26.91% of the votes, he made it to the runoffs that were held in February 2013. In the second round he lost to Nicos Anastasiades having received 42.52% of the votes. Malas ran again as an independent candidate in the 2018 presidential election, regaining the support of AKEL. The Cyprus Institute is an educational institution with a scientific and technological orientation. It was formally established in 2005, and started operations in 2007. Nicos Anastasiades ( ; born 27 September 1946) is a Cypriot politician and businessperson, who served as the seventh president of Cyprus from 2013 to 2023. Previously, he was the leader of Democratic Rally between 1997 and 2013 and served as Member of Parliament from Limassol between 1981 and 2013. Having served in parliament for over three decades, Anastasiades was elected to the presidency in 2013 Cypriot presidential election, 2013 amid a deep economic crisis. He responded by negotiating a bail-out agreement with the Troika (European group), Troika group, consisting of the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund. Demetris Christofias
Demetris Christofias ( ; 29 August 1946 – 21 June 2019) was a Cypriot politician, who served President of Cyprus from 2008 to 2013. He was previously President of the House of Representatives from 2001 to 2008 and General Secretary of the Progressive Party of Working People from 1988 to 2009. Taking on the challenge of responding to the 2008 financial crisis, he implemented a wide-ranging social program, increasing pensions and the minimum wage. At the end of his term, however, the 2012–2013 Cypriot financial crisis led to a collapse in the banking system. Putting blame on the banks, he attempted to raise taxes on them as a way of funding the island's recovery, but failed to pass this into legislation. Also citing deadlock in reunification talks, he announced that he would not seek re-election, becoming the first Cypriot leader to opt-out of running for a second term.
