Star City Confederate Memorial
The Star City Confederate Memorial is located at the southwest corner of the town square of Star City, Arkansas. The marble monument depicts a Confederate Army soldier standing in mid stride with his left foot forward. His hands hold the barrel of a rifle, whose butt rests on the monument base. The statue is about high and square; it rests on a marble foundation that is long, wide, and high. The monument was erected in 1926 by a local chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy at a cost of about $2,500. The memorial was first placed on the grounds of the 1911 courthouse, which was made into the town square after that building was torn down in 1943. That year, the memorial was moved to the grounds of the new courthouse. In the 1990s it was moved back to the town square, and now stands near its original location. Star City Commercial Historic District
The Star City Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic commercial center of Star City, Arkansas, the county seat of Lincoln County. The district consists of thirteen buildings on two city blocks, as well as the Star City Confederate Memorial. The buildings are located on Jefferson Street, between Arkansas and Bradley Streets, and on Bradley Street between Jefferson and Drew Streets. The memorial is located in the town square, near the junction of Jefferson and Bradley. The buildings in the district were built between 1916 and 1928, and have for the most part escaped major alterations since their construction. Minor changes generally involve changes to store fronts, such as the boarding over of transom windows, the replacement of recessed entries with flush ones, and changes to the fenestration. United Daughters Of The Confederacy
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) is an American neo-Confederate hereditary association for female descendants of Confederate Civil War soldiers engaging in the commemoration of these ancestors, the funding of monuments to them, and the promotion of the pseudohistorical Lost Cause ideology and corresponding white supremacy. Established in Nashville, Tennessee in 1894, the group venerated the Ku Klux Klan during the first half of the 20th century and funded the construction of a monument to the Klan in 1926. According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the UDC "elevated he Klanto a nearly mythical status. It dealt in and preserved Klan artifacts and symbology. Lincoln County Courthouse (Arkansas)
The county courthouse of Lincoln County, Arkansas is located at 300 South Drew Street in Star City, the county seat. The two story building was designed by Wittenberg & Deloney of Little Rock and built in 1943. It is predominantly buff-colored brick, with limestone trim, and has a flat roof that is hidden by a parapet. The building's front, or western, elevation, has a central projecting section that is slightly taller than the wing sections, and is faced primarily in limestone. Four triangular stepped limestone pilasters frame the elements of this section, including the main entrance in the central bay, which now has replacement doors of aluminum and glass. Above the pilasters is a limestone panel identifying the building as the "Lincoln County Courthouse" in Art Deco lettering. It is believed to be the only Art Deco building in the county.
