Stanisław Karpiel
Stanisław Karpiel (May 8, 1909 – November 12, 1992) was a Polish cross-country skier who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics. He was born in Kościelisko and died in Zakopane. In 1936 he was a member of the Polish cross-country relay team which finished seventh in the 4x10 km relay event. In the 50 km competition he finished 26th and in the 18 km event he finished 42nd. The Cross of Valour ( pl, Krzyż Walecznych) is a Polish military decoration. It was first introduced by the Council of National Defense on 11 August 1920. It is awarded to an individual who "has demonstrated deeds of valour and courage on the field of battle." The Home Army ( pl, Armia Krajowa, abbreviated AK; ) was the dominant resistance movement in German-occupied Poland during World War II. The Home Army was formed in February 1942 from the earlier Związek Walki Zbrojnej (Armed Resistance) established in the aftermath of the German and Soviet invasions in September 1939. Over the next two years, the Home Army absorbed most of the other Polish partisans and underground forces. Its allegiance was to the Polish government-in-exile in London, and it constituted the armed wing of what came to be known as the Polish Underground State.
