Stanford Harmonics
The Stanford Harmonics are a co-ed a cappella group from Stanford University. Known for their alternative rock repertoire and award-winning recordings, the Harmonics have garnered international recognition for their performances and have been featured on BOCA, Sing, and Voices Only a cappella compilations. The Harmonics are one of the few collegiate a cappella groups that own their own wireless microphone equipment and have developed a live performance style that includes the use of electronic distortion and sound effects. History The group's third release, ''Insanity Laughs'' (1999), was received as a "breakthrough album" for the unprecedented mixing of its drum-like vocal percussion. A Cappella
Music performed a cappella ( , , ; ), less commonly spelled acapella in English, is music performed by a singer or a singing group without instrumental accompaniment. The term ''a cappella'' was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance music, Renaissance polyphony and Baroque (music), Baroque concertato musical styles. In the 19th century, a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony, coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists, led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music. Collegiate A Cappella
Collegiate a cappella (or college a cappella) ensembles are college-affiliated singing groups, primarily in the United States, and, increasingly, the United Kingdom and Ireland, that perform entirely without musical instruments. The groups are typically composed of, operated by, and directed by students. In the context of collegiate a cappella, the term ''a cappella'' typically also refers to the music genre performed by pop music, pop-centric student singing groups. Contemporary A Cappella Society
The Contemporary A Cappella Society (of America), or CASA, is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that fosters and promotes a cappella music of all styles around the world. CASA was founded in October of 1990 by Deke Sharon while attending Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, Medford. Sharon published a newsletter, the Collegiate A Cappella Newsletter (later renamed to the Contemporary A Cappella Newsletter), which was mailed to a database of collegiate a cappella groups maintained by his own college a cappella group, the Beelzebubs. The Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARAs) were established the following year in 1992. The organization is the host of several annual events including the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella. International Championship Of Collegiate A Cappella
The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), originally the National Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (NCCA, a play on NCAA), is an international competition run by Varsity Vocals, that attracts hundreds of college ''a cappella'' groups each year. The competition sees groups from the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom compete across 9 regions, culminating in the ICCA Finals in New York City. A small number of groups from Ireland, South Africa, and Mexico have participated sporadically as well. Cynthia Yih Shih (born October 3, 1978), better known by her stage name Vienna Teng, is an American pianist and singer-songwriter who lives in Washington, DC. Teng has released five studio albums: '' Waking Hour'' (2002), ''Warm Strangers'' (2004), '' Dreaming Through the Noise'' (2006), '' Inland Territory'' (2009) and '' Aims'' (2013). Collegiate a cappella arrived at Stanford University in 1963, when the Stanford Mendicants were founded by a transfer student from Yale University, the school where collegiate a cappella began. The Mendicants were the first a cappella group on the West Coast of the United States. The all-male Mendicants were followed by Stanford's second a cappella group, Stanford Counterpoint, Counterpoint, the first all-female a cappella group on the West Coast.
