Standard Bank Art Gallery
The Standard Bank Art Gallery was launched on 4 June 1990. The gallery is located in Marshalltown at the heart of Johannesburg. This is a non - commercial gallery and a feature of Standard Bank's investment in arts and culture. In 2023, the Standard Bank Gallery was the recipient of the 2023 Experts’ Choice Award. Standard Bank Corporate Art Collection The Standard Bank Corporate Art Collection is one of South Africa's most expansive and comprehensive collections. This collection was founded in the 1960s and includes over 1,200 works by 250 (mainly) South African artists. In 1979, Standard Bank Foundation of African Art forged a partnership with the University of the Witwatersrand Art Gallery (now WITS Art Museum) with the purpose of safeguarding, preserving and promoting African art. Berni Searle
Berni Searle (born 7 July 1964 in Cape Town, South Africa) is an artist who works with photography, video, and film to produce lens-based installations that stage narratives connected to history, identity, memory, and place. Often politically and socially engaged, her work also draws on universal emotions associated with vulnerability, loss and beauty. Searle lives and works in Cape Town, South Africa, and is currently an associate professor at the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. Cecil Skotnes
Cecil Skotnes (1 June 1926 – 4 April 2009) was a prominent South African artist. He was born in East London in 1926, studied drawing in Florence, Italy, the Witwatersrand Technical Art School and then the University of the Witwatersrand. He was appointed cultural officer in charge of the influential Polly Street Art Centre in 1952. Skotnes was a founding member of the Amadlozi Group in 1961. In 1979 he moved to Cape Town, where he lived until his death. He died on 4 April 2009 at the age of 82. In 2003, he was awarded the Order of the Ikhamanga (Gold) by the South African government for his contribution to South African art. Daniel Macnee
Sir Daniel Macnee Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, FRSE Royal Scottish Academy, PRSA LLD (4 June 1806, Fintry, Stirlingshire – 17 January 1882, Edinburgh), was a Scottish people, Scottish portrait painter who served as president of the Royal Scottish Academy (1876). Jackson Hlungwani (born 1923 - 20 January 2010) was a South African sculptor, priest, and founder of the ''Yesu Galeliya One Aposto in Sanyoni Alt and Omega'' in New Jerusalem, a site located in Mbhokota in the Limpopo. A deeply religious man, Hlunwani's work is defined by its spirituality and connection to the community. Early life Childhood Jackson Hlunwani was born in the year 1923, birth date unknown, to a Tsonga family in a Nkanyani Village in present-day Limpopo. Hlungwani was named after his grandfather’s name, Bhandi Pavalala, which is believed to be a sacred Tsonga/Shangaan name of the gods. Jane Alexander (born 1959) is one of the most celebrated artists in South Africa. She is a female artist best known for her sculpture, '' The Butcher Boys''. She works in sculpture, photomontages, photography and video. Mary Sibande
Mary Sibande (born 1982) is a South African artist based in Johannesburg. Her art consists of sculptures, paintings, photography, and design. Sibande uses these mediums and techniques to help depict the human form and explore the construction of identity in a postcolonial South African context. In addition, Sibande focuses on using her work to show her personal experiences while living through Apartheid. Her art also attempts to critique stereotypical depictions of women, particularly black women. Early life Sibande was born in Barberton in apartheid South Africa and was raised by her grandmother. Walter Battiss
Walter Whall Battiss (6 January 1906 – 20 August 1982) was a South African artist, also known as the creator of the "Fook Island" concept. Early life Battiss was born into an English Methodist family in the Karoo town of Somerset East. He first became interested in archaeology and tribal art as a young boy after moving to Koffiefontein in 1917. In 1919 the Battiss family settled in Fauresmith where he completed his education, matriculating in 1923. In 1924 he became a clerk in the Magistrates Court in Rustenburg.
