Stefan Olof "Stan" Saanila (born 27 June 1968 in Helsinki) is a Finnish stand-up comedian.Uppslagsverket FinlandSaanila, (Stan) He was one of the team captains, opposite novelist Jari Tervo, in the television show ''Uutisvuoto'', filling a vacancy left when longtime captain Tommy Tabermann stepped down in order to run for a place in the Parliament of Finland in 2007. Stand-up comedy is a comedic performance to a live audience in which the performer addresses the audience directly from the stage. The performer is known as a comedian, a comic or a stand-up. Stand-up comedy consists of one-liners, stories, observations or a shtick that may incorporate props, music, magic tricks or ventriloquism. It can be performed almost anywhere, including comedy clubs, comedy festivals, bars, nightclubs, colleges or theatres. History Stand-up as a Western art form has its roots in the stump speech of American minstrel shows, which featured an actor in blackface delivering nonsensical monologue to the audience. While the intention of stump speeches was to mock African-Americans, they also occasionally contained political and social satire. The minstrel show would later influence theatrical traditions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as vaudeville and burlesque. Jari Tervo (born 2 February 1959) is a Finnish author. He is a major name in current Finnish literature. He writes traditional plot-driven prose Prose is a form of written or spoken language that follows the natural flow of speech, uses a language's ordinary grammatical structures, or follows the conventions of formal academic writing. It differs from most traditional poetry, where the f ..., ranging from humorous (''Poliisin poika'') to a detective story (''Myyrä''). Uutisvuoto ( Finnish for "newsleak" - the pun works equally in both languages) is the Finnish version of the popular British television quiz show '' Have I Got News For You''. Broadcast on Saturday nights on Yle TV1 since 1998, the show received very high viewing figures. Uutisvuoto was aired on Yle TV1 from 1998 until May 2018, then moved to MTV3 in January 2019. Uutisvuoto mainly follows the same format as ''Have I Got News For You''. The guests are usually celebrities, and frequently politicians. In two presidential elections, both of the second-round candidates appeared as guests: to-be-president Tarja Halonen and Esko Aho in 2000, and president Halonen and Sauli Niinistö in 2006. Winning the show correlated with winning the election contest itself in both instances. In 2006, the "presidential show" broke all viewing records when it was watched by 1.4 million viewers (in a country of 5.2 million). Tommy Tabermann (3 December 1947, Ekenäs – 2 July 2010, Helsinki) was a Finnish contemporary poet and politician, radio personality and journalist.Helsingin Sanomat, July 4, 2010, p. B7. Since 1998 and until 2006 he was known to Finnish audiences for his witty role as team captain in the weekly Saturday night television show ''Uutisvuoto'', the Finnish version of '' Have I Got News For You'', opposite the bestselling author Jari Tervo. Tervo recently characterised his popularity with the following anecdote: "When he was sixty, nine out of ten persons in an elevator at the Stockmann department store (in Helsinki) recognised him. The tenth person was Japanese." He left the show in the spring of 2007 in order to run for the Parliament of Finland.
