Stan Eldon
Stanley Edward Eldon (born 1 May 1936) is a retired British cross country runner. Eldon is notable for winning the International Cross Country Championships held in Cardiff in 1958. He was awarded his MBE for his work in setting up the Reading half-marathon. Biography Eldon was inspired to become a runner after viewing a film of the 1948 Olympics and joined Eton Athletics Club (as it was called at the time). In 1956 he ran a junior World Best of 14 minutes 19 seconds over 3 miles. As an adult he came to note as an aggressive front runner. Eldon finished second behind George Knight in the 6 miles event at the 1957 AAA Championships before he became both the British 3 miles champion and British 6 miles champion, after winning the British AAA Championships titles at the 1958 AAA Championships. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. Nos Galan Road Race
The Nos Galan road race is an annual five-kilometre (3.1 mi) road running event, held on Nos Galan (), New Year's Eve, in Mountain Ash, in the Cynon Valley of South Wales. History The Nos Galan race celebrates the life and achievements of Welsh runner Guto Nyth Brân. Founded in 1958 by local runner Bernard Baldwin, it is run over the route of Bran's first competitive race. At its height covered by the BBC nationally as part of its New Year's Eve celebrations, the races were halted in 1973 due to concerns expressed by the Glamorgan Police regarding the undue delay to traffic. The Nos Galan race was resurrected in 1984, when a reduced field of 14 runners ran a race. Frank Sando
Frank Dennis Sando (14 March 1931 – 13 October 2012) was a British long-distance runner. A two-time winner at the International Cross Country Championships (1955, 1957), Sando represented Great Britain in two consecutive Summer Olympic Games. Early life Sando was born on 31 March 1931 in Maidstone, to Ernest and Maria Sando. Attending Maidstone Grammar School, Sando first began his involvement in athletics at sixteen, breaking the school mile record. Simultaneously, he began an amateur career at Maidstone Harriers, winning the Kent County Junior Cross-Country Championship in 1948 and the Kent Youth Cross-Country Championship in 1949. He finished fourth in the English Youth Cross-Country Championship in 1948 and 1949. Having left school, Sando undertook National Service in October 1949, joining the army.
