''Stampede'' is a 1934 Australian radio play by Bernard Cronin Bernard Cronin (18 March 1884 – 9 June 1968) was an Australian author and journalist. The play was performed by the BBC in 1938 and was repeated a number of times. Notably, it was the first Australian play to be broadcast in Arabic. The play was produced again in 1936, 1940, 1941, 1945 and 1951. It was also played on stage. The play was published in a 1937 collection of one act Australian plays. According to one review "the nervous tension caused by a prolonged drought is used effectively. Bernard Cronin
Bernard Cronin (18 March 1884 – 9 June 1968) was an Australian author and journalist. With Gertrude Hart, he founded the Old Derelicts' Club in 1920 which later became the Society of Australian Authors. Life Cronin was born in Ealing, Middlesex, England, second son of Charles Frederick Cronin (1859–1887), an auctioneer, and Laura ''née'' Marshall (1850–1934). His father was advised to go to Australia for the sake of his health. Charles and his wife set off in 1886, leaving Bernard and his brother in England in the care of their grandmother and aunts. In Mitcham, South Australia, Bernard's father succumbed to his illness and died. Laura returned to London and in 1889 married Frederick Cecil Browne, who had taken her under his wing during her husband's illness and accompanied her back to England, and the two of them returned to Australia in the same year, accompanied by Bernard's brother Laurence Kimberley. ''The Examiner'' is the daily newspaper of the city of Launceston and north-eastern Tasmania, Australia. Overview ''The Examiner'' was first published on 12 March 1842, founded by James Aikenhead. The Reverend John West was also instrumental in establishing the newspaper and was the first editorial writer. Initially, ''The Examiner'' was published weekly on Saturdays. Six months later, it began publishing on Wednesdays as well. In 1853, the paper changed to tri-weekly editions, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and first began daily publication on 10 April 1866. That frequency lasted until 16 February the following year. Tri-weekly publication then resumed and continued until 21 December 1877, after which daily publication returned.
