Stamford Bridge Greyhounds was the greyhound racing operation held at Stamford Bridge in London. Origins During 1933, Stamford Bridge Ltd, a subsidiary of parent company Greyhound Racing Association (GRA), took over the athletics track belonging to the London Athletic Club and forced them to leave because they wished to construct a greyhound track around the football pitch. Opening The first night of racing was held on 31 July 1933 The track circumference as was 434 yards and it was described as a fast, average sized course with short 80-yard straights and banked bends of wide radius. Railers showed a slight advantage and the greyhounds were supplied by the famous GRA Hook Estate and Kennels in Northaw. The hare system was an outside McKee Cable hare. 1931 Speedway Southern League
The 1931 Southern League was the third season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams, and its final season before amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Leagues. The Northern teams also had their third season known as the 1931 Speedway Northern League. Summary Both Birmingham teams based at Perry Barr and Hall Green had left as had Coventry who returned mid-season to replace Leicester who were liquidated in April. Harringay Canaries resigned in June to be replaced by Belle Vue who then rode both in the Northern and Southern Leagues. Nottingham closed in July but they were not replaced and their results stood. The league season was the longest in the short history of the competition as teams met each other four times instead of twice. The Wembley Lions won their second consecutive title finishing three points clear of 1929 champions Stamford Bridge. Dick Smythe
Richard Charles Smythe (17 August 1907 – 27 February 1967) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. He would earn ten Australia national speedway team international caps. Career Smythe a former jockey and butcher's roundsman was an early pioneer speedway rider in Australia and the United Kingdom. He first arrived in the UK during 1928 and rode in various exhibition matches. He returned to Australia for 1929 and 1930 and won the 1930 Golden Sash and First Division handicap during 1930. His first taste of league speedway in Britain was for the Stamford Bridge Pensioners, when he joined the London club for the 1931 Speedway Southern League season. On the formation of the National League in 1932, he was retained by the Pensioners and won the National Association Trophy with them.
