Stadium Zbigniew Podlecki
The Zbigniew Podlecki Stadium (Polish Stadion im. Zbigniewa Podleckiego) formerly the Stadion Wybrzeże, is a 10,000-capacity motorcycle speedway stadium on the eastern outskirts of Gdańsk in Poland. The venue is used by the speedway team Wybrzeże Gdańsk, who compete in the Team Speedway Polish Championship. It also hosts football (90 x 50 metres), concerts, shows, festivals, recreational and integration events. There is a mini speedway track next to the stadium. History The stadium opened on 8 May 1925 as part of the Free City of Danzig and was built on the site of former fortifications. It was commissioned by Germans taking the name Kampfbahn Niederstadt. When it was first used it was mainly for football and also contained an athletics track. After World War II the stands were enlarged and the Marathon Gate was built. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . The Team Speedway Polish Championship ( Polish: ''Drużynowe Mistrzostwa Polski, DMP'') is an annual speedway event held each year in different Polish clubs organized by the Polish Motor Union (PZM) since 1948. Zbigniew Podlecki
Zbigniew Podlecki (19 January 1940 – 8 January 2009) was a Polish motorcycle speedway rider who won Team World Champion title in 1965. He was born in Vilnius, Lithuania. His career ended in 1972 when he had a road accident. He died in Gdańsk in January 2009. His team Wybrzeże Gdańsk named their stadium after him and it i snow called the Stadium Zbigniew Podlecki. The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM; en, International Motorcycling Federation) is the global governing/sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 116 national motorcycle federations that are divided into six regional continental unions. There are seven motorcycle-racing disciplines that FIM covers, encompassing 82 world championships as well as hundreds of secondary championships: enduro, trial, circuit racing, motocross and supermoto, cross-country, e-bike, and track racing. Darcy Stephen Ward (born 4 May 1992 in Nanango, Queensland) is an Australian former motorcycle speedway rider who won the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Australian Under-21 Championships as well as the 2009 and 2010 World Under-21 Championships. His career was ended by spinal injuries sustained in a crash in 2015. Career history Junior career Darcy Ward started his speedway career as a junior in his native Queensland.
