St Mary The Virgin, Hemingbrough
St Mary the Virgin, Hemingbrough, also known as Hemingbrough Minster, is a church in Hemingbrough, which is near Selby in North Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building. History The building originates from the late 12th century CE, additions were made in the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries. William the Conqueror gave the church to the Durham Priory, prior and convent of Durham, England, Durham. On 26 October 1426 Henry VI of England, Henry VI gave licence to convert it into a collegiate church with residentiary canons whose period of residence was thirteen weeks each. From 1479 this also applied to the Provost (religion), provost who until then was compelled to be resident for the greater part of the year. There were also three prebendaries, six vicars, and six clerks. The college was Dissolution of the Monasteries, suppressed in 1545. The church is home to one of the UK's oldest surviving Misericords dating to the first part of the 13th century. Architecture ... A provost is a senior official in a number of Christian denomination, Christian churches. Historical development The word (Latin for 'set over', from , 'to place in front') was originally applied to any ecclesiastical ruler or dignitary. It was soon more specifically applied to the immediate subordinate to the abbot of a monastery, or to the superior of a single Monk, cell, and it was defined as such in the Rule of St Benedict. The dean (Christianity), dean () was a similarly ranked official. Chrodegang of Metz adopted this usage from the Benedictines when he introduced the monastic organization of College (canon law), canon-law colleges, especially cathedral chapter, cathedral capitular colleges.
