The Anglican Church of Canada is the third largest church in Canada, after the Roman Catholic Church and the United Church of Canada. After many years of debate, the first blessing of a same-sex partnership took place in 2003, by the Diocese of New Westminster, in Vancouver. This was not considered a marriage ceremony, but rather a blessing of "permanent and faithful commitments" between persons of the same sex. Currently, the dioceses of Algoma, British Columbia, Central Newfoundland, Eastern Newfoundland, Edmonton, Huron, Kootenay, Montreal, New Westminster, Niagara, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Ottawa, Qu'Appelle, Quebec, Rupert's Land, the Territory of the People, Toronto, and Western Newfoundland permit same-sex marriage, as does the Anglican Military Ordinariate. The Anglican Church of Canada (ACC or ACoC) is the province of the Anglican Communion in Canada. The official French-language name is ''l'Église anglicane du Canada''. In 2017, the Anglican Church counted 359,030 members on parish rolls in 2,206 congregations, organized into 1,571 parishes. The 2011 Canadian Census counted 1,631,845 self-identified Anglicans (5 percent of the total Canadian population), making the Anglican Church the third-largest Canadian church after the Catholic Church and the United Church of Canada.2011 is the most recent census to collect information on religion in Canada. Anglican Diocese Of Quebec
The Anglican Diocese of Quebec was founded by Letters Patent in 1793 and is a part of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada of the Anglican Church of Canada, in turn a province of the Anglican Communion. In 1842, her jurisdiction was described as "Canada East" or "Lower Canada" (technically an historical term in 1842). The diocese comprises 720,000 square kilometres and took its present shape in 1850 with the carving off of what is now the Diocese of Montreal. It includes a territory of west to east from Magog to the Gaspe and the Magdalen Islands, south to north from the United States border to Kawawachikamach and several communities along the Lower North Shore. The diocesan office is located in Quebec City, as is Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral, completed in 1804. Bishops' Court
An ecclesiastical court, also called court Christian or court spiritual, is any of certain courts having jurisdiction mainly in spiritual or religious matters. In the Middle Ages, these courts had much wider powers in many areas of Europe than before the development of nation states. James Ferry (priest)
James Ferry is a priest of the Anglican Church of Canada. In 1992 he was removed from his parish after it was revealed that he was gay and in a relationship with another man. Raised in the United Church of Canada, later a member of a Baptist congregation, Ferry joined the Anglican Church in his twenties. He studied at the University of Toronto at Scarborough, Tyndale University College (then Ontario Bible College) and Wycliffe College. He was inhibited from functioning as a priest and later became affiliated with the Metropolitan Community Church, a gay and lesbian founded church which has taken an explicitly gay-affirming stance including the ordination of openly gay candidates for the ministry. He was later partially reinstated as an Anglican priest and now occasionally celebrates the Eucharist and preaches at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Toronto. Same-sex marriage in Canada was progressively introduced in several provinces by court decisions beginning in 2003 before being legally recognized nationwide with the enactment of the '' Civil Marriage Act'' on July 20, 2005. The Anglican Diocese of Western Newfoundland is a diocese of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada of the Anglican Church of Canada.
