St. Hovhannes-Mkrtich Church (Yukhari Aylis)
St. Hovhannes-Mkrtich Church was an Armenian Apostolic Church located in the lower district of Yukhari Aylis village of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.Ayvazyan, Argam. ''Nakhijevani ISSH haykakan hushardzannery. Hamahavak tsutsak.'' Yerevan: Hayastan, 1986, p. 28. It was located approximately 400-500m southwest of St. Shmavon Church of the same village. History The church was renovated in 1663, according to literary sources and an Armenian inscription on the base of the cupola of the church.Ayvazyan, Argam. Yuxarı Əylis
Yuxarı Əylis ( hy, Վերին Ագուլիս, lit=Upper Agulis, translit=Verin Agulis) is a village and municipality in the Ordubad District of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It is located in the left and right sides of the Ordubad-Aylis highway, 12 km in the north-east from the district center. Its population is busy with gardening, farming, animal husbandry. There are secondary school, club, library, communication branch and a medical center in the village. It has a population of 1,916. The village was an important settlement of the Vaspurakan province of the Kingdom of Armenia or the Vaspurakan Kingdom, and a number of Armenian merchants who plied their trade along the Silk Road were of Agulis origin. The Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic ( az, Naxçıvan Muxtar Respublikası, ), is a landlocked exclave of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Saint Thomas Monastery Of Agulis
Saint Thomas Monastery of Agulis ( hy, Ագուլիսի Սուրբ Թովմա առաքյալ վանք) was an Armenian Apostolic monastery, located in the Yuxarı Əylis village of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. It was historically built in the Goghtn district of the historical Armenian province of Vaspurakan. History According to tradition, St. Thomas Monastery was founded by St. Bartholomew the Apostle in the 1st century, and his pupil, Kums ( hy), was appointed its priest. It was probably a small chapel-like building that was rebuilt and expanded after the conversion of Armenia to Christianity. It was the centre of Goghtn parish, from the early Middle Ages to 1838. In the monastery there were some relics: right hand of Thomas the Apostle donated by Catholicos Yeprem I in 1821, relic of St. Gayané ( fr) and right hand of Hakop Hayrapet.
