St. Catharines Spartans
The St. Catharines Spartans were a Junior "B" box lacrosse team from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. The Spartans played in the OLA Junior B Lacrosse League. History The Spartans franchise won the Founders Cup as Canada's Junior B box lacrosse champions in 1981 and 1996. In 2002, the Spartans were league champions again, but lost the national final to the Clarington Green Gaels. Founded in 1979, as the Niagara-on-the-Lake Warriors, the Warriors won their league and the national championship in only their third season. In 1984, the team changed its name to the Niagara Spartan Warriors. In 1994, the team shortened its name to just the "Spartan Warriors" and in 1996 won the league and national championships again. In the 1996 national final, the Spartan Warriors defeated the Orillia Rama Kings to win it all after not being able to beat the Kings for nearly 3 years running. Box lacrosse, also known as boxla, box, or indoor lacrosse, is an indoor version of lacrosse played mostly in North America. The game originated in Canada in the 1930s, where it is more popular than field lacrosse. Lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport. Box lacrosse is played between two teams of five players and one goalie each, and is traditionally played on an ice hockey rink once the ice has been removed or covered. The playing area is called a box, in contrast to the open playing field of field lacrosse. The object of the game is to use a lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by shooting a solid rubber lacrosse ball into the opponent's goal. OLA Junior B Lacrosse League
The Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League (OJBLL) is a box lacrosse league sanctioned by the Ontario Lacrosse Association in Canada. The league features twenty-five teams in Ontario, one in Quebec, and one in the Akwesasne (which straddles the two aforementioned provinces and New York) that annually play a 20-game schedule and four rounds of playoffs for the J. A. MacDonald Trophy. After the conclusion of the playoffs, a league champion represents the OJBLL at the Founders Cup National Junior B Championship. Founders Cup
The Founders' Cup is the championship trophy of Canada's Junior "B" lacrosse leagues. The custodial duties of this trophy fall upon the Canadian Lacrosse Association. The national champions are determined through a round robin format with a playdown for the final. History The original Founders Cup was inaugurated in 1972 by the CLA in honour of "the founders of organized lacrosse," especially "The Father of Organized Lacrosse", William George Beers of Montreal, Quebec. The Green Gaels are a Junior "B" box lacrosse team based in Clarington, Ontario, Canada, that plays out of the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada. The Gaels play in the OLA Junior B Lacrosse League. History The early years Founded in 1946 by Jim Bishop, the Green Gaels were a lacrosse team from day one in the OLA Junior A Lacrosse League, playing out of Toronto, Mimico, Huntsville, Oshawa, and currently Bowmanville. In the Gaels first seven seasons in Oshawa, they won the Minto Cup as National Junior "A" Champions. Since the Minto Cup's inception in 1937, no team has ever won more than 4 championship in a row—other than the Gaels.
