Sri Lanka National Blind Cricket Team
Sri Lanka National Blind Cricket Team represents Sri Lanka at blind cricket. The Sri Lankan team have participated in every edition of the World Cup for Blind. It is run by the Sri Lanka Cricket Association of the Visually Handicapped. The team generally participates in One Day Internationals and T20Is. In the inaugural edition of the ICC Blind Cricket World T20 held in 2012 in India, Sri Lanka finished third after losing to India in the semi-finals. Sri Lanka also went on to participate in the 2nd edition of the ICC Blind World T20 in 2017, which was also held in India. Sri Lanka once again went out in the semi-finals, losing to India by 10 wickets. Sri Lankan Blind cricket team set a world record for the highest ever opening stand of 334* against New Zealand in their opening match of the 2017 tournament. World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) is an administration of blind cricket to manage it at international level. The WBC was established in September 1996 when a meeting held in Delhi, India to promote and control the blind cricket globally. George Abraham is the founding chairman of WBC. Suranga Sampath
Suranga Sampath is a Sri Lankan blind cricketer. He was part of the Sri Lankan team during the 2017 ICC World T20 for the Blind. In the 2017 Blind T20 World Cup, he was the top scorer throughout the tournament with an aggregate of 733 runs with an average of excess 150. He also scored 5 centuries during the tournament, the most by any player in a single Blind T20 World Cup series; thus becoming the only batsman to score 5 centuries in a single edition of a Blind T20 World Cup. He picked up 4 wickets during the tournament to be adjudged the man of the tournament. Blind cricket is a version of the sport of cricket adapted for blind and partially sighted players. It has been governed by the World Blind Cricket Council (WBCC) since 1996. So far, five Blind World Cups have been held: New Delhi, India (1998); Chennai, India (2002); Islamabad, Pakistan (2006), and India (2018). In 2012, the first Blind World Cup T20 was held in Bangalore, India. Blind cricket relies on common use of the 'sweep shot', in order to provide maximum chance of the bat hitting the ball. A One Day International (ODI) is a form of limited overs cricket, played between two teams with international status, in which each team faces a fixed number of overs, currently 50, with the game lasting up to 9 hours. The Cricket World Cup, generally held every four years, is played in this format. A Twenty20 International (T20I) is a form of cricket, played between two of the international members of the International Cricket Council (ICC), in which each team faces a maximum of twenty overs. The matches have top-class status and are the highest T20 standard. The game is played under the rules of Twenty20 cricket. Starting from the format's inception in 2005, T20I status only applied to Full Members and some Associate Member teams. 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup
The 2018 Blind Cricket World Cup was the fifth Blind Cricket World Cup tournament, and was held from 8–20 January 2018 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. In the final, defending champions India defeated Pakistan by 2 wickets to secure their 2nd Blind Cricket World Cup title under the captaincy of Ajay Kumar Reddy. Six teams, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Australia and Nepal played in the tournament, with Nepal making their first ever appearance. India played all of their group stage matches of the tournament at neutral venues in the United Arab Emirates, after the foreign ministry of India blocked them from travelling to Pakistan.
